Just as he stepped into the bathroom, he paused and looked back. "Oh, by the way. When I was coming up, I heard the nurses mention you're expecting visitors tomorrow. Did you invite someone?"

Panic flashed across Mia's eyes. She stiffened and raised her chin defensively. "What kind of nonsense is that? Why would I invite anyone?"

"Can't I just have friends who want to visit me? Do you think I'm a friendless freak like Nora?"

Aaron narrowed his eyes. He knew Mia well enough to recognize guilt when he saw it. Though he didn't know the specifics, his gut told him this was directly tied to Nora.

Ever since Mia found out Nora had solved The Human Bone Soup Case, she had been throwing non-stop tantrums, acting as if Nora had personally served her the soup.

The longer Aaron stayed with Mia, the more he realized how incredible Nora had been. But the moment Mia bailed him out, he knew that until his own plans succeeded, he had zero chance of ever getting Nora back.

He offered a small smile. "That's good. I was just worried something happened."

Mia rolled her eyes. "What could possibly happen? Stop being so paranoid. Oh, and you don't need to come tomorrow. My mom will be here. Go back to work."

A bitter smirk tugged at the corner of Aaron's mouth. This just confirmed that tomorrow was going to be massive. If it wasn't, there was no way Mia would let her personal punching bag out of her sight for a full day. The last few days had been pure hell.

"Okay," he said softly. "Call me if you need anything."

He played the role of the devoted, concerned boyfriend perfectly. Though Mia acted completely unbothered, she secretly loved the power trip.
