Cynthia flinched. She was already exhausted from taking care of Mia at the hospital, her complexion pale and drawn. Now, a dark shadow passed over her face.
"What are you losing your temper over now?" she asked, carefully stepping closer to him.
She fought down the urge to snap back. When she looked up at him, she forced her expression into a picture of gentle concern. She knew Leonard loved it when she played the submissive, devoted wife. Whenever she was backed into a corner, she played the victim card. It had worked like a charm for years.
But ever since she caused a scene at the hospital, Leonard had changed. It was as if he finally had the ammunition he needed to draw a hard line between them. Since Mia had been admitted, Leonard hadn't visited his daughter once.
During that time, Cynthia had even received anonymous photos of Leonard with different women. There was nothing explicit, but knowing Leonard, she didn't have to guess what he was up to. He was never a man to stay loyal to one bed. If he were, he wouldn't have cheated on his first wife with her.
Swallowing her bitter resentment, Cynthia maintained her gentle facade.
"You have the nerve to ask me why I'm mad?" Leonard glared at her, utter disgust rolling off him. "You know damn well what your precious daughter did! Did you put her up to it?"
He sneered. "I always knew you were nothing but trouble. Marrying you was the biggest mistake of my life!"
