Nora laughed, shaking her head at his absurdity. "Valerie was just worried about us."

She couldn't exactly brush off her best friend’s genuine concern and hang up on her. That would be incredibly rude.

"I get that she's worried, but monopolizing your time? Does she think I don't exist?"

Nora looked him up and down. "Well, considering you're currently a wounded soldier, maybe she thought—"

Nora caught herself and snapped her mouth shut. If someone else called him a wounded soldier with a few fractures and scrapes, Nathan wouldn't care. But hearing it from Nora? He'd definitely take offense. A lot of offense.

Noticing the dangerous gleam in his eyes, she wisely hit the brakes before she pushed him too far. Knowing Nathan as she did, the man was shedding his restraints by the day. With their wedding approaching, it was best not to poke the bear that was desperately waiting for an excuse to pounce. If that bomb went off early, she definitely wouldn't be able to handle it.

Realizing where her thoughts were wandering, a flush crept up her neck. She grabbed a change of clothes. "I'm going to shower."

She hadn't gotten the chance to actually wash up before the blood fiasco. Her hair was still damp, and her inner neat-freak was screaming. There was no way she could sleep like this.

Halfway to the bathroom, she realized Nathan was tailing her. Startled, she stopped and gave him a suspicious look. "What are you doing?"

A flash of hurt crossed Nathan's eyes at her defensive posture. "I'm worried something else might happen. I just wanted to go in and test the showerhead for you."

Realizing she had misjudged him, Nora's tense shoulders relaxed. "Didn't they just sweep the room?"

"It was a timer device last time. A basic sweep might miss something similar. Relax, I'll step out once I know it's safe." He paused, his voice dropping an octave. "I promised I wouldn't take you before the wedding."

Nora stared at him, mortified. "Who asked you about that!"
