The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 579

His little scheme having worked perfectly, a triumphant grin spread across Nathan's face.

Catching his smug expression, Nora finally realized she'd been played. She shot him an exasperated look. "You did that on purpose?"

It was just a ring. Did he really need to manipulate her into agreeing?

He didn't even try to deny it. "I just want to give you the best."

Knowing her as well as he did, if he had just flat-out asked to go ring shopping, she would have found a dozen practical reasons to say no.

And while her reasons would undoubtedly make perfect logical sense, he simply didn't care.

A wedding ring was a symbol.

Just because she didn't care about the symbolism didn't mean he didn't.

He couldn't even begin to imagine how satisfying it was going to be to casually flash that ring at everyone he met.

Marrying the love of his life felt like winning the most hard-fought battle of his existence.

Especially after waiting for this exact moment for so many years.

Honestly, if she hadn't vetoed the marriage license idea, he genuinely would have handed them out like party favors.

It was a very good thing Nora didn't know what was going through his head.

Otherwise, she would have called him an absolute psycho.

People wanted wedding favors for good luck. What on earth were they supposed to do with a copy of his marriage license? Hang it on their doors to ward off evil spirits?

"Nathan, Nora, I'll be heading out now."

Harold had finished up with his assistant. Seeing the couple huddled together, a warm, sparkling affection filled his eyes.

He said his goodbyes, reminded them to call the manor staff if they needed anything, and headed out, leaning heavily on his cane.

"Sir, Madam, I'll make sure he gets to his meeting smoothly. Please don't worry," Harold's Assistant added politely from the doorway before following him out.

Seeing her deeply unimpressed look, he chuckled. "Grandpa's planning on handing out massive company-wide bonuses to celebrate the wedding anyway. I'm just taking the credit early."

She didn't know much about corporate management, so she wasn't sure if that was standard practice for large conglomerates.

Offering a noncommittal nod, she let the subject drop.

But Nathan wasn't done teasing her. "We aren't even married yet and you're already managing my finances? So this is what having a wife feels like. I like it."

Her face flushed crimson. "Don't be ridiculous. I never said I was trying to save you money."

"Worrying about my wallet is basically the same thing. You're amazing, Nora. A top-tier forensic pathologist and a financial advisor all rolled into one. I'm the luckiest guy alive."

His relentless, playful flirting finally broke through, and she burst into laughter.

"Your logic is flawless, Captain Peyton. No wonder they call you the top detective."

Catching her sarcasm, he gave a solemn nod. "True. While the title is slightly exaggerated, it's ultimately a testament to my sheer brilliance."
