Chapter 99
Cecilia’s POV
It was late when I reached the gardens. Whatever Jax needed to talk about, it must have been important, or he would never call me out here at this hour.
It was quiet.
Peaceful in a way that filled me with tranquility.
This was the first time that I’ve been out here during the night, and I had to admit that it was gorgeous. Yet, beneath the beauty, a flicker of unease stirred, making my heart beat a little faster. The flowers glistened under the moon’s illuminating lights, and strings of light hung overhead, outlining the entire area. It made it look brighter and even more gorgeous, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was being watched.
I walked down the pathway, my fingers brushing against the petals of the lilies. The cool night breeze caused goosebumps to form on my arms. I wrapped my arms around myself and stopped near one of the rose bushes. This was one of my favorite parts of the gardens.
There weren’t as many lights here, and the stars above shone down like they were lighting the way for me. The breeze picked up slightly, and I cursed myself for not bringing a coat with me as I rubbed my arms with the palms of my hands.
“Jax?” I whispered into the night, only a little afraid of being heard by one of the night guards.
It was strange, but I couldn’t smell Jax’s scent. Usually, I would have picked up on him by now, which only deepened my unease. It was quite difficult to sneak up on me in general, yet tonight, something felt off.
I looked around for a moment despite myself. I said his name a couple more times, suddenly feeling a bit wary.
I thought about that note; it seemed odd for him to leave me a note instead of coming to find me himself. I started to think I might have misread something.
The cold air turned bitter, but it was the feeling of being watched that sent icy chills down my spine. I tightened my hold on my arms, my head spinning with suspicion and fear.
“Jax?” I said again, though I doubt it could be heard even if he was in the area.
Something wasn’t right.
A rustling sound in one of the bushes made me spin around. Just as my instincts kicked in and I was about to attack, a small bunny popped out. I stared at it, open-mouthed for what felt like an eternity, my body and soul still trying to process what my mind already knew.
It was only a bunny.
There was no danger.
I let out the breath I had been holding and went towards the bunny.
“You had me scared,” I told it, my voice soft as I reached down to touch its fluffy little tail.
Just as my fingers grazed the soft fur, I felt movement behind me.
It was too late for me to react, though, because suddenly, there was a sharp pain in the nape of my neck. It felt like a bee sting, but I knew it wasn’t.
I quickly reached up to touch the tender spot, my mind running around in circles, trying to figure out what had just happened. I barely noticed that my vision was getting hazy or that I was no longer standing on my feet.
When I turned, my eyes found a masked figure staring down at me.

I opened my mouth to say something… anything.
But I couldn’t.
My words were caught in my throat. The world around me grew fuzzy, and I saw black dots in front of my eyes just before everything around me went completely dark.
Leopold’s POV
I paced back and forth in my room for a long time. My mind won’t stop thinking about Cecilia and the kiss we shared. The way her lips fit over mine, and how her body was pressed against me… or maybe I was pressed against her. I had her up against a tree … but it didn’t seem like she hated it.
