Maevis nodded before she closed her eyes. She started to murmur in Latin; I’d only ever seen her do something like this a couple of times, and usually Latin was her language of choice for complex spells.

Her voice carried authority, and the more she spoke, the stronger it became.

The sage and crystals began to glow on the table, and the room warmed despite the sudden gust of wind that blew my hair across my face, even though we were inside. I glanced at the windows to ensure that they were closed, and when I saw that they were, my eyes widened.

Of course, I knew of powerful magic, but witnessing it was something otherworldly.

Fae didn’t seem to bat an eye, though; this looked to be a part of her normal world. Once Maevis stopped talking, Fae reached across the table and picked the pendant up, cupping it in her hands. It was still glowing, and it seemed to be glowing even brighter now that Fae was holding it.

She closed her eyes as she concentrated, murmuring something I couldn’t quite understand, but it looked like she was speaking to someone. Perhaps it was her wolf.

And then the glow of the pendant started to make Fae glow a little as well, and I felt the need to take a sudden step back.

Maevis finally opened her eyes, and she too watched Fae as she tried to connect with Cecilia’s wolf spirit. I frowned when I saw that her brows were furrowing. It seemed like she was confused about something.

“Taking too long,” Warren growled. “Why is it taking so long?”

We had been standing in silence for several minutes, and the longer we stood, the more confused Fae seemed.

“Fae,” Maevis said gently, not wanting to disturb her and break her concentration, but needing her to hear her words. “I can’t keep the paradox open for much longer. Are you able to connect with the wolf spirit?”

“No,” Fae whispered. “It seems like something is blocking me.”

“Blocking you?” Maevis asked, her frown deepening. “Are you sure?”

Fae’s eyes opened.

“I can’t get a connection. The item wants to connect… It’s trying to break through the barrier, but something is keeping it away.”

“What does that mean?” I asked, my voice coming out angry and demanding.

“I’m not entirely sure. I haven’t done this often, and the times I have done this, I was able to get through without issues,” Fae told me. “But something is blocking her wolf spirit. I fear she might be in danger, Alpha.”

Warren roared in my ears, and I knew from the look they were giving me that they could see him surging to the surface. I wasn’t going to be able to hold him back this time; he was angry and out for blood.

He wanted two things, one of which was finding Cecilia.

The other was to kill anyone who ever hurt her; though I had to remind him that I also hurt her, but I was willing to spend the rest of my life making up for it.
