Without another word, he left my study. I rubbed my temple with my pointer finger and my thumb, feeling a headache approaching. I needed to get out of here; I was about to lose my mind if I had to look at another report. I ignored the food on my desk, no longer hungry, and left my study.
Most avoided me as I walked past them; I’m sure Landon warned them not to come near me right now, and honestly, I was kind of grateful for that.
By the time I reached my room, I felt drained from the day already. My mind kept going from Cecilia to my mother. Neither of which I really wanted to be thinking about. The cake that we shared this morning still sat on by nightstand. The memory was fresh in my head, even though it wasn’t me she was spending time with; it was my wolf.
In a way, it drove me crazy that she treated him so differently. I almost wanted to know what it was like to be treated like that by her. To have her so open and honest and feel the friendship that my wolf craved out of her. She was really the only one he considered a friend, which meant she had to have been special.
Before I could think better of it, I was at her bedroom door. I lifted my fist to knock, but then froze. She wouldn’t treat me the same as she treated Warren, so spending time with her and talking with her would be difficult.
I couldn’t be me when I was around her; I had to be him.
Warren wouldn’t knock on her door, which still mortified me to find out, but I pushed the thought away. I had to remember that my wolf was an animal.
I took a deep breath and opened her bedroom door, letting myself in.
It was fairly late, so I thought maybe she would be sleeping at this hour, but when she looked up from the book she was reading, curled up in bed, I found myself frozen. The soft glow of the lamp beside her illuminated her features, and I realized, not for the first time, that she was quite beautiful.
“Cecilia,” I said, breaking the silence that stretched between us.
The corner of her lips lifted as she set the book down; I didn’t see the cover, but I wanted to ask her about it.
Why did I want to ask her about it?
“Warren?” She asked, her eyes searching mine as if she could literally see my wolt there.
I cleared my throat.
“Yeah,” I lied.
She got out of bed, standing before me. She had no makeup on, her hair was down, and she was wearing sleep clothes, but my Goddess, she was gorgeous.
I shook the thought out of my head and cleared my throat.
“I was wondering if you wanted to go for a walk outside?”
She raised her brows, glancing out the window.
“It’s late,” she told me. “Is that a wise idea?”
“It’ll be fine,” I said before I could think better of it. “I mean… nobody will be around to bother us.”
“And are we walking in human form or…?” she said, cocking her head of the side.
Human form,” I said with a nod. “Definitely human form. I think it’ll be good for us to talk.”
She squinted her eyes at me
“You sound different. Are you okay?”
I felt my face heating under her scrutiny.
Shit. I said too much. I’m not acting like him enough, and she’s noticing.
“I’m fine,” I said, maybe a little too quickly. “So, a walk?”
She thought about it for a moment, sucking her bottom lip into her mouth, something my eyes seemed drawn to for no reason. Then she nodded her head once.
“A walk sounds nice,” she said thoughtfully. “Let me just get some clothes on.”
