Chapter 86
I raised my brown.
“What?”
“A race,” he repeated “To my room. Winner get’s first slice.”
I was about to tell him that it was his birthday cake, and he should have the first slice anyway, but the look he was giving me silenced my words, and all I could think of doing was nod. He needed this distraction, and I was just glad he was letting me spend time with him on the day he hated most.
“You’re on,” I say, grinning
Before he could reply or have a proper countdown, I was already running
“Not fair! Cheating!” He called after me, but there was laughter in his voice.

I laughed so much that my chest ached. I felt like a kid again, and it was the most carefree feeling in the world.
I barely registered, nearly knocking Landon down as we climbed the stairs. Though I got a head start, Warren had quickly caught
“Your Majesty? Cecilia?” Landon called after us as he clutched the railing to the stairs to keep himself from falling.
“Sorry!” I said over my shoulder, no longer caring about being caught.
Neither of us slowed down; in fact, Warren got even faster and then passed me. I wasn’t far behind him; I was a good runner. One of the fastest in my pack, in fact.
We reached his bedroom, and Warren threw the door open, stumbling inside.
“Winner!”
I laughed and shook my head.
“You’re lucky it’s your birthday,” I teased.
Suddenly, Landon was at the doorway, staring between the two of us.
“What on earth was that?” He asked, folding his arms across his chest. “You nearly knocked me down.”
“Sorry, Landon,” I said between chuckles. “It was an accident. We are about to cut Leopold’s birthday cake. Would you like to join us?”
I motioned for the cake that still sat on Leopold’s nightstand. Landon frowned as he took in the cake and then the plates and forks that Warren now held.
“You’re celebrating your birthday?” He said, sounding surprised.
“I am,” he replied, keeping it short.
Landon stared around his face for a moment, like he was trying to figure something out.
“That’s huge, Your Majesty. What made you change your mind?”
“Time for a change,” he said, lifting one shoulder. “At least, just this once.”
“Well, I’m glad for that,” Landon said, a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “I will pass on the cake, though. I have some things to take care of this morning. I will leave you to it. But try to refrain from running people down.”
With that, he turned and left the room, shutting the door behind him.

Warren and I fell into a fit of giggles, and I swatted his arm.
“That was close,” I tell him “Leopold will definitely find out about this now.”
“Cake time.”
I smiled as I went towards the cake, only remembering that I had forgotten something very important.
“I forgot the knife,” I said, stopping short. “How are we going to cut the cake?”
Warren thought about it for a moment before the corner of his lips lifted into a smile. He reached over to the cake and poked his finger in the frosting, and then brought it to his lips.
“Mmmmm, it’s delicious,” he said, his smile growing even wider.
I raised my brow at him as he did it again, and then I started to laugh.
“You’re ridiculous,” I said, shaking my head.
“Have some cake, Cecilia,” he said, holding out his finger for me.
I laughed again and shook my head.
“I’ll get my own, thank you,” I say as I poke my finger in the frosting.
He wasn’t wrong; it was probably one of the best cakes I’ve ever made. The buttercream frosting truly was incredible, and I let out a soft moan as the flavors hit my taste buds. I closed my eyes, savoring the taste.
When I opened them, Warren was staring at me, his eyes dark.
