Chapter 80
At that point, I was already pretty much done, so I put the decorations down and turned to face them fully.
“Too late; the cake is done, and he’s gorgeous if I do say so myself.”
“You will get yourself killed,” Mike said, his eyes wide. “Why are you testing him like this? He already grounded you ”
“Ever think that maybe he hates his birthday because everyone chooses to avoid him?”
“No,” they both said in unison, much like the girls did earlier.
I blinked.
“You’re all being ridiculous. Again, it’s just a cake… It’s not a party.”
“Why must you be so stubborn?” Landon asked, shaking his head.
“Guess it was just the way I was raised,” I retorted. “Now, help me with the forks and plates. If you’re good, I’ll let you have a slice.”
My tone turned teasing.
Neither of them cracked a smile; they only looked at one another. Landon let out a breath.
“Help her,” he murmured. “I need to be somewhere.”
He left without another word.
Mike stood there, awkwardly for a moment, and I raised my brows, my eyes flickering between him and the plates on the counter that I had set out earlier. With a sigh, he picked up the plates and forks, and I gave him a pleased and winning smile as I grabbed a candle from one of the drawers along with a lighter; then, I picked up the cake.
Mike helped me bring the stuff into my bedroom. I waited until after midnight before I got out of bed and grabbed the cake. Mike was still there when I opened the door, and his face was pale.
“Can I convince you not to do this?” He asked.
I shook my head.
“No, you can’t.”
I couldn’t explain it, but I knew in my gut that Warren needed this more than anything. I needed to prove to him that I was his friend and that I cherished him. I hoped this cake would speak the words I couldn’t say earlier.
Leopold was a deep sleeper, while Warren was a light one, so I knew that if I went into his room, Warren would be the one to wake. At least, that’s what I was hoping would happen.
Mike let out a breath as he grabbed the plates and forks from the table across from my room, and then he followed me to Leopold’s bedroom. I turned the knob, and his door opened with ease. Mike hesitated outside the bedroom door; I walked into the darkened room, and only the moon’s rays through the curtains guided my path.
Leopold was fast asleep in his bed, completely oblivious that I was there.
