Chapter 81

Cecilia’s POV

Warren blinked, a small furrow forming between his brows. His eyes landed on me after a moment, the confusion evident in his gaze as he tried to process what was happening

“Happy birthday,” I repeated, bringing the cake craser so he could get a better look.

His brows furrowed even more, and then his eyes landed on the cake I was holding.

“What is that?” He murmured groggily

“It’s a cake,” I tell him. “I made it for you… for your birthday.”

“My… birthday…” he muttered.

I nodded and sucked my bottom lip into my mouth.

“I just wanted to apologize for the other night,” I tell him, my eyes shifting to the cake so I could avoid his gaze. “I should have included you in my plans, and I didn’t. I’m so sorry, Warren.”

He stared at me for what felt like an eternity, and it got to the point where I was about to ask him if he had heard me.

“I didn’t mean to make you feel like I don’t care about you because that’s the furthest thing from the truth. I hope you can forgive me, and that this proves I do cherish your friendship. I worked on this all day.”

He stared at me for a beat longer, and then his eyes shifted to the cake again.

“You actually made me a cake?” He asked, his eyes hyper fixed on the cake in my hands.

My cheeks warmed..

“It’s the least I can do,” I tell him. “You deserve to have something delicious on your big day.”

He was a little too quiet, and it made me wonder if it was because he was still mad at me. My stomach knotted at the thought.

“No one ever made cake for me before,” he murmured as he sat up, his eyes still on the cake. “What kind is it?”

“I wasn’t sure what kind you liked, so I stuck with vanilla,” I tell him with a shrug. “Can’t go wrong with that.”

“I can’t remember the last time I had cake,” he said, shaking his head like he was snapping himself out of his stupor. “You shouldn’t have done that.”

I blinked, confused.

“Why not?” I asked.

“I don’t celebrate my birthday.”

My chest tightened.

“Leopold doesn’t celebrate his birthday. But what about you, Warren?” I asked, sitting down on the side of his bed.

His brows raised at that, and just when I thought he was about to say something, it seemed as if he changed his mind.

“You deserve good things too,” I continue. “Besides, it’s just a cake. Everybody likes cake.”

He stared at me for a beat longer.

“I suppose…” he said, almost hesitantly.

“Come on, Warren. Humor me. Make a wish.”

The candle flickered in front of his eyes.

“That seems unnecessary”

I was surprised to hear Warren say that; it didn’t seem like him. Then again, I knew he was still upset with me. I had to be patient with him; he would eventually come around and be my friend again.

“Most of what we do is unnecessary,” I tell him. “What’s gotten into you? Are you really still mad at me?”

Something about the way he was looking at me made my stomach flutter slightly, and I cleared my throat, trying to push that feeling down and far away. I thought for a second that he was going to deny me and tell me to leave.

But instead, he leaned forward, paused, and then he blew out the candle.

I let out a satisfied breath.

“See? That wasn’t so hard,” I teased as I plucked the candle out of the cake. I licked the frosting off the end of the candle, his eyes following my movements.
