Chapter 32
Cecilia’s POV
After waking up again, I was alone in the servant quarters, resting in the same spot and position that I had fainted, I didn’t know what else to do but return to my regular maid duties. I tried to avoid Leopold directly, sticking to other parts of the house. Scrubbing floors, dusting bookcases. Keeping my head down.
Maybe Leopold would let me live. Maybe he would just ignore me entirely now. I could be a maid, and he could go on with his business, and no one had to lose their head over anything…
But then Landon came up behind me, his footsteps stiff and measured on the tiles I had just cleaned.
“The Alpha King will see you now, Cecilia.”
I lowered my dusting rag in defeat. “Alright.” It wasn’t like I could run.
I followed Landon to Leopold’s office feeling like a prisoner marching toward the guillotine. I had no idea how I’d managed to live this long. But I was certain now that my time was up.
“Alpha King. Cecilia is here,” Landon said.
Leopold was looking at some papers, standing on the outside of his desk. At my arrival, he lowered the papers, freeing his hands and turned to me. He probably didn’t want to get blood on them.
I braced myself, expecting the worst.
“Cecilia, you are now an official concubine,” he said. With that, he turned back to the desk.
I opened my mouth. Closed it. Like a fish.
“I’m… what?” I must have misheard.
“You are an official concubine,” he said gruffly. “Do not make me repeat myself.”
“Yes, but – ”
He snapped back around, his gaze flashing dangerously. “Do not question me.”
I closed my mouth for real this time, and kept it closed. Leopold glared so hard I felt like I was going to melt out of my skin.
Landon cleared his throat. “I’d like to show Cecilia her renovated room now, if I may.”
“Do it,” Leopold said, dismissing me as he returned to his work and his desk.
Landon approached and quickly ushered me out of the room. I remained uneasy and confused. He had said… But how could he have meant that?
“This way,” Landon said and led me to the room I had been given before, the one I had wanted to ignore. It had been altered since the last time I had been inside of it. The decorations were more elaborate, and the bed was bigger – like it was meant to be shared.
But surely Leopold didn’t want to actually have sex with me… did he? He always acted so utterly indifferent around me. But if he didn’t, why make me a concubine at all?
Leopold wasn’t going to give me any answers, but he wasn’t here now. Landon was, and maybe I would have better luck with him.
“Do you know why he has decided to do this?” I asked.
Landon gave me a severe sort of glance. “This is a gift, Cecilia. To question it makes you appear ungrateful.”

“It’s fine,” Landon said. “But don’t let Alpha King Leopold hear you talk like that. Best to keep those thoughts to yourself.”
“I understand.”
“Enjoy the room,” Landon said. “There’s just one more thing. Your raid.”
