The Alpha King's Mind Reading Maid (Cecilia) novel Chapter 29

Chapter 29

Cecilia’s POV

My heart picked up speed, pounding hard in my chest. Warren’s words were almost like a confession, but that couldn’t be. He wasn’t really emotionally mature. He couldn’t know the implications of his words. Most likely, he just didn’t want to lose a friend.

Seeing his pitiful expression, I couldn’t bring myself to reject him. Instead, I rolled toward him in bed and gave him my best smile. I couldn’t tell how convincing it was, but I hoped it would be enough.

“I won’t leave the palace,” I promised.

“Okay…” Warren said. My words seemed to satisfy him, and with them, he finally relaxed Closing his eyes, he drifted off to sleep. I watched him for a moment, observing the gentle rise and fall of his chest as all of his worries seemed to be swept away.

Thank the Goddess, today’s troubles seemed to finally be over.

I watched for a moment more, to ensure he was asleep. Then, I slipped out from the covers. Whatever lies I had told myself about Leopold maybe being more understanding if he woke up here instead of his own bed, I couldn’t convince myself of them

anymore.

If Leopold was here, I had to be somewhere else.

I’d only been given this room near his today. My other room that I had been assigned from the start was down in the servants’ quarters. I was sure I could find a sleep there, far away from the King. There, I would be safe. 1

Exhausted, I dragged myself out into the hallway and then down to the servants’ quarters. I found my old room, which had blissfully remained unoccupied and walked over to the bed before settling down.

My eyes closed quickly.

But my rest was not peaceful.

My father pushed me down. In his hand, he wielded a cane. Again and again, he brought it down onto me.

“Vile creature! You should be dead! I never wanted you! You don’t belong here!”

Each strike with the cane was shockingly painful. Tears filled my eyes and spilled over. I searched the room for someone to save

Sophia and her mother were standing near the doorway. They watched my father beat me.

“Hit her harder,” Diana said.

“This is what she deserves,” Sophia agreed.

“I don’t…” I whimpered, curling into myself on the floor. “Father, please…”

Another strike, harder than the last, hit me, and I screamed.

Then, at once, everything went dark. A pair of strong, warm arms wrapped around me, and I smelled a gentle scent. Comforting, it smelled like a home I didn’t know existed.

These feelings chased away the pain and fear.

Slowly, a sense of calm washed over me and I fell into a deeper, dreamless, peaceful sleep.

When I blinked my eyes opened the next morning, I was more refreshed than I had ever been. I couldn’t remember the last time I had slept this well. It certainly hadn’t been since coming to the palace.

I blinked and stretched. Rubbing the sleep from one eye, I started to sit up, only to realize that I was being confided across the

walst. Looking down, I nearly gasped. I clasped both hands over my tnouth to keep from making a sound.

There was an arm draped over my waist.
