The Alpha King's Mind Reading Maid (Cecilia) novel Chapter 28

Chapter 28

“I’m okay,” I told him again I’m not dying. Dook.”

He opened his eyes, but it was almost as if he was looking past me to some other place, some other time.

There was a secret hidden there, somewhere in his words, but I didn’t know what it was.

For now, I could only focus on calming him down. “Look at me,” I said. “I’m right here. I’m alive. It’s just some blood.”

Warren blinked a few times, then looked down at my hands. They were already starting to heal.

Frowning, Warren scooped me up into his arms and started carrying me back to his room.

“I can walk,” I told him but he shook his head, not accepting any counter-arguments.

Unknown POV

From the darkened corners of the hallway, a shadowy figure watched as Vivian and her maids fled in terror.

Cecilia, on the other hand, remained unharmed.

Before they could be spotted, the figure slipped away from the scene.

They moved to a quiet corner where they silently and swiftly wrote a letter. After sealing the letter in an envelope, they scrawled a name across the front.

Diana.

Cecilia’s POV

When we were in his room, he dropped me down on the bed, then went to retrieve some bandages. I still had the jar of ointment.

Carefully, Warren worked to bandage my hand. “I’m sorry,” he said. “My fault.”

“Shh,” I shushed softly. “It’s over now. You are making it better. It wasn’t your fault.”

“It was,” Warren said. “I’m the one who did this.”

When the bandages were secure, he looked around. “You should sleep here next to me tonight. I will keep you safe. I will watch and protect you.”

As nice as that sounded, I couldn’t accept. With a small, sad smile, I gently shook my head, telling him, “I can’t, Warren. Leopold wouldn’t like it.”

Warren chuffed. “But I’d like it.”

My smile grew a little. “I know. But… I would be punished if Leopold found out. Then I wouldn’t be able to play with you anymore.”

Warren frowned. “I wouldn’t like that…”

“I should get back to my own quarters,” I said.

“I will come with you,” he said, standing. Before I could argue, he said, “You shouldn’t be alone. Those nasty women… they could come back.”

I wasn’t going to argue with that. An escort to ensure my safety sounded fine.

Nodding, I walked into the hallway. Warren followed along with me.

I’d thought, once I entered my room, that he would leave, but he didn’t. Instead, he walked to the bed and flopped down on it.

I guessed maybe I’d have a guest in my bed after all. But if we were here, and not in Leopold’s room, maybe that would eliminate misunderstanding.

I went into the bathroom to quickly wash away the blood and change into my sleep clothes. Then I returned to the bed and slipped under the covers. Warren stayed on top of them.

I turned off the light, but he tossed and turned, unable to sleep.

“Tell me about your past,” he asked me.

I hesitated. “Maybe we should just get some rest.”

“We are best friends, aren’t we? And I told you Leopold’s secrets. Shouldn’t I know some of yours?”

When he put it like that, it was harder to deny him.

My chest ached, thinking back on everything that had happened to me. All these years, no one had ever asked to hear my story.

I’d always been alone.

I looked at the man beside me and reminded myself, this was Warren, not Leopold. I didn’t have to be afraid of revealing too much. Warren would keep my secret.
