Chapter 251

Tonight was the rehearsal ceremony.
It was pretty much a mock wedding that we were all forced to attend… and as the King’s favored concubine, I was. also forced to attend the actual dinner rehearsal after the fact. I was the only concubine who had to attend that portion of the rehearsal, and my stomach was in knots.
I hadn’t spoken to Leopold since our argument last night, and I truly had no intention of speaking/to him again. I couldn’t believe how ungrateful he was after I was the one who calmed down his wolf and got him out of that banquet hall when I did.
I shouldn’t have been surprised by his attitude, but at the same time, I couldn’t help but be hurt.
I stood in the changing room section of the concubine lounge, staring into one of the floor-to-ceiling mirrors. Jewel was adjusting my dress, a small smile on her lips as she took me in.
“Absolutely gorgeous,” she breathed.
She was making more of a fuss over my dress than she was the others because, in her words, mine was the only one that truly mattered.
I didn’t believe that, but I also wasn’t going to argue with her either.
I had to admit, though, the dress was gorgeous.
It was a deep midnight blue, dark enough to appear almost black beneath the softer corners of candlelight. Silver embroidery traced the bodice in delicate patterns that resembled curling vines and moonlit branches, the stitching subtle enough to be elegant rather than extravagant.
The fitted bodice hugged my waist before lowering into a long skirt that skimmed the floor with every step. Layers of lightweight fabric shifted around my legs like water, creating the illusion that I was floating rather than walking.
The neckline sat modestly across my shoulders, exposing just enough skin to appear graceful without drawing improper attention. Small silver beads were sewn through the skirt, catching the light whenever I moved and scattering tiny flashes of silver around me like distant stars.
My hair had been pinned partially up, leaving soft curls to frame my face and fall over my shoulders. A pair of sapphire earrings completed the look, their blue stones matching the dress perfectly.
I barely even recognized myself.
I never thought that I could look this proper; it was proper enough that I would fit in perfectly during this ceremony. But not flashy enough to stand out in the center of the crowd, which was exactly what I liked most
about it.
Jewel stepped back once she was finished.
“You should head to the ceremony first,” she said, motioning for the doorway. “You’ll be announced right before the King and the future Queen.”
My cheeks burned as I turned to look at her.
“I’m being announced?” I asked.

She raised her brows.
course you are… You are his favored concubine. It’s to be expected that you’ll be a part of their lives once they are married.”
“That’s not the case,” I blurted, shaking my head. “He promised I would be set free after the wedding”
“That might be so, but the Kingdom isn’t aware of that fact,” she tells me. “A favored concubine is meant to remain by the King’s side and take care of his… needs… throughout his marriage.”
“I refuse to be the other woman,” I said, folding my arms across my chest. “I will not subject myself to such deceit.”
“Again, to the Kingdom, that is the fact, even if it’s not reality. We still must prepare you for your role as favored concubine. Landon will be meeting you at the entrance of the ballroom to escort you inside. He will be announcing your arrival shortly. So, you should head there now.’

I let out a breath as I nodded and stepped away from the mirror, finally pulling my gaze away from myself.
