“It has everything to do with you, considering you are the one who almost killed them,” she seethed. “How dare you speak to me like this when I did nothing but help you!”

“Help me?” I asked, my eyes narrowing, “The only thing you’ve done is make me look incompetent in front of my

own men.”

“I’m not the one who lost control of my wolf,” she said, her voice rising an octave, “I’ve never been around anyone so ungrateful!”

“Then perhaps you shouldn’t be around me if that’s how you truly feel.”

I looked away from her, unable to see the hurt in her eyes any longer. I was pushing my luck, and I hated myself for it. But I couldn’t stop; the memory of her with Jax was all-consuming; it was turning me into something I didn’t recognize.

“Perhaps you should get your own priorities figured out, Your Majesty,” she said through her teeth before she turned and stormed out of my chambers, slamming the door behind her.

The room grew way too quiet with her gone. There was a part of me, a large part of me, that wanted to go after her. My hands itched to reach out to her and tuck that strand of loose hair behind her ear, allow my fingers to graze her cheekbone, and feel the softness of her skin.

To pull her into this bed and make her forget Jax ever existed.

But I couldn’t… I knew that wouldn’t be fair to her. None of this was fair to her, and until I figured out a way to make it fair for her… I knew keeping my distance was the best thing I could do.

There was a knock on my door, and for a moment, I thought maybe it was her again, but when the door opened, and Landon stepped through, a wave of disappointment washed over me.

“Sorry to bother you, I saw Cecilia leaving and she looked rather angry. I had a feeling you might have been awake,” he said, the corner of his lips curving slightly, and he couldn’t hide the amusement behind his gaze.

I couldn’t help but roll my eyes.

“Are you here to yell at me as well?” I murmured, looking away from him.

“I doubt that’s what happened,” he said, closing the door behind him. “Cecilia wouldn’t yell at you as soon as you’ve woken. She was rather worried about you, in fact. Once again, she was able to calm the angry beast inside of you. At least half of you enjoy her company. The other half is as stubborn as always.”

I pressed my lips together.

“Is there anything more you need, Landon?” I asked, not wanting to talk about this any further.

That was honestly the last thing I wanted, but I nodded because I knew it would look bad if I started to avoid her.

“Not yet, but the warriors I sent to Alpha William’s pack are due to return tomorrow. Hopefully, there will be some news,” he told me. “Also, a couple of Sophia’s friends will be arriving tomorrow morning. They are here for the rehearsal ceremony tomorrow night.”

I pressed my lips together, a low growl escaping me.

I had forgotten that the ceremony was tomorrow night; it was the last thing I wanted to take part in.
