Chapter 252
puld already hear the loud voices and the soft music coming from the ballroom before I even reached the corridor that led there.
“I wouldn’t have believed it if I didn’t see it for myself,” a familiar voice said from nearby, making my steps falter.
I turned slowly, and my eyes widened.
Mia and Ava stood before me, both their eyes burning a hole in my face. They looked exactly how I remembered them growing up. Mia, with her dark curly hair and pale green eyes, and Ava, with her red hair and dark blue eyes. Ava had freckles around her nose and cheeks that I had always been jealous of, while Mia had no freckles, but she had an adorable mole on her cheek that boys used to go crazy over in high school.
These two girls had always been my rocks growing up; they were my friends, and I was shocked to see them standing in front of me.
I didn’t have many friends in the pack. After high school, we stopped speaking, and I wasn’t entirely sure why.
“She truly is a concubine,” Ava said with a laugh, shaking her head. “Who would have thought little Miss Perfect, Cecilia, would subject herself to being the King’s whore.”
Her words were like a slap in the face, and I stepped back like they physically pushed me.
“I can’t believe Sophia was actually telling the truth,” Mia muttered, rolling her eyes. “Which means she’s been telling the truth for years. Cecilia truly is an attention whore.”
“What?” I asked, my brows furrowed. “What are you talking about? When did you start hanging out with Sophia?”
I was mainly confused because, even though I hadn’t spoken to these girls in a while and I barely considered them my friends anymore, they had made it clear growing up that they couldn’t stand Sophia.
They only hung out with her because I hung out with her; I defended Sophia to them many times, and they always looked at me like I was crazy for it.
I considered Sophia my best friend, and they knew that. After a while, they stopped talking badly about her, but they also didn’t hang out with her either. They only hung out with her when they hung out with me.
The corner of Ava’s lips curved.
“Did you truly think we were your friends?” Ava asked, folding her arms across her busty chest. “We were never really your friends. We were always her friends. She always complained about you, saying you were money- hungry and only wanted attention. At first, we didn’t believe her.., but then we started to see the signs for ourselves.”
“Yeah,” Mia agreed, rolling her eyes. “Why do you think we stopped talking to you after high school?”
My heart shattered.
They were never my friends; when I thought they were, and defended Sophia, they were really her friends and slandered me behind my back.
“Cecilia,” Landon said as he walked down the corridor. “I’ve been waiting for you. Are you ready?”
My chest tightened, but I managed to pull my gaze away from those I thought were my friends and face Landon.
I couldn’t cry; not now at least. Not when I worked so hard on my makeup and didn’t want to be another disappointment. I nodded, forcing a smile as I made my way down the corridor and towards Landon, ignoring the

laughter of Ava and Mia behind me.
Are you well?” Landon asked, glancing over my shoulder at the girls. “Are those Sophia’s friends from her pack?”
I nodded.
“Yeah, it seems so,” I murmured.
I suppose they’ve always been her friends.
The walk to the ballroom was quiet; once we reached the doors, Landon explained how it would work.
