let out a breath and ran his fingers through his hair.

“I heard your father mentioning that it was a keepsake meant for you… And that was all he knew. He has no idea where it’s hidden, but it’s somewhere in the pack. Diana was unhappy about that reply because it meant she had to keep searching for it. She’s been searching for it for years.”

My stomach knotted even more, and nausea rolled around inside of me.

“I’m sorry,” he said quickly, trying to catch my eyes with his own. “I know this is a lot of information. I don’t mean to throw it all at you at once. Please, forgive me. I will do what I can to help you figure all of this out.”

I nodded slowly, though I barely even registered his words.

I knew one thing for sure: I needed to find my father and ask him what this was all about. I knew that he and Diana had been staying at this palace in one of the guest rooms; they were most likely roaming around as we speak.

I didn’t bother saying another word to Jax as I brushed past him and outside of my bedroom door.

“Cecilia,” he called after me as he rushed to keep up.

We were both in the hallway when he grabbed hold of my arm.

“Wait a minute,” he said, a bit breathless. “You don’t know what you are walking into. Maybe you should think more clearly before you confront either of them. They are clearly unhinged people.”

“I need to find out the truth, Jax,” I said as tears started to spill down my cheeks. I couldn’t hold them in any longer. “My father is keeping secrets from me, and they are about my mother. If she left me something… I need to find out what it is. It could be a clue as to how she died in the first place. Maybe even the reason she died.”

“You don’t know that…”

“No, but I won’t find out by staying in my room all day and playing the role of concubine,” I tell him, shaking my head. “This life isn’t for me… I need to find out the truth about my mother and then get the hell out of here before I start becoming consumed.”

He released his hold on my arm, his expression softening a fraction.

“I know you think you need all the answers but sometimes answers only cause more questions… maybe even more problems. Wouldn’t it be better not to know at all?”

I shook my head without hesitation.

“No,” I tell him, my voice coming out hoarse. “It’s not.”

He let out a breath as we stared at one another, and then he stepped into my space, reaching up to tuck a strand of hair behind my ear. Something about his touch felt wrong, and a shiver ran up my spine; even Lora, who had been quiet during this entire exchange, stirred with unease.

“I suppose you wouldn’t be you if you didn’t run into the fire,” he said, the corner of his lips curving. “It’s part of what I’ve always liked about you, Cecilia. Promise me that you’ll be careful?”

“I will.”

Before I knew what was happening, he was pulling me into his arms for a tight hug. I let out a breath, feeling relieved to be comforted by a friend for once.

Once he was released, I started towards the guest wing of the palace until I found my father’s door. His scent was streng, so I knew he was there without a doubt. Thankfully, I didn’t have to knock on the door because he was already walking out of the room, stumbling over his own feet.

He reeked of boos, and my nose crinkled at the sight and scent of him. 1

“You are a mess and a disgrace!” Diana sneered from the doorway, folding her arms across her chest. “Return to me once you sober up and we can talk… until then, stay away. You’re embarrassing.”

She slammed the door in his face as he swore.

He started down the hallway, but froze when he saw me standing there, the corner of his lips curved.
