Cecilia’s POV

I was in a daze on my way back to my room. The way Leopold looked at me when he spotted me walking out of the clinic was engraved in my head. He would never accept this baby, which only finalized my plans to get out of here

or me.

I couldn’t stay in this palace despite what Warren might want. It would only put myself and this baby in danger. For what felt like the hundredth time this evening, my hand found my lower belly; it trembled as I bit my lower lip.

There was a baby inside of me.

Leopold’s baby.

What was I going to do?

As I made my way back to my room, my entire body felt numb. I thought for sure I was about to lose my mind. I barely made it into my room before I heard my name coming from behind me, making me freeze on the spot.

“Cecillia?”

I paused with my hand on the doorknob, and I closed my eyes, wishing and praying that this wasn’t happening to me right now. But I knew the moment I turned around, I was going to face Jax, which meant I needed to put a happy face on because he couldn’t know about what was happening.

Nobody could.

This was a secret I had to carry with me to the grave.

I’slowly turned to face him; a fake smile plastered on my face, and I hoped he couldn’t tell that it was fake. Telling from the frown marring his features, my hope died in my throat.

“Everything okay?” He asked, his brows furrowed. “You seem… off.”

I nodded without hesitation, trying to seem as okay as I could be.

“Yeah, I’m great,” I tell him, my voice way too high-pitched to be convincing. “Is there something I can help you with, Jax?”

He studied me for a moment longer.

“I was hoping we could talk,” he tells me, cocking his head to the side. “Is now an okay time?”

I wanted to tell him that now was probably the worst time that could ever exist, but I knew that would only lead to follow-up questions, so I smiled and nodded.

“Yeah, of course,” I said, releasing the doorknob and turning fully to face him. “Now is a perfect time.”

He nodded as he stepped closer to me.

“I overheard a conversation that I think you should be aware of,” he tells me, his expression turning serious.

My stomach knotted, and suddenly, he had my undivided attention.

“It was Diana and your father,” he continues, his voice dropping an octave.

My eyes widened; I looked around, hoping that nobody was in earshot. Nobody, other than Jax, knew that I was

related to Alpha William, and I wanted to keep it that way at least for right now. The less they knew, the better.

Without a second thought, I grabbed hold of his arm and pulled him towards my door. I opened it and ushered him inside, checking once again to make sure nobody was around before I followed him into the room and shut the door.

He turned to look at me, his eyes finding mine.

“I’m sorry to come to you with this news so suddenly,” he tells me. “But I didn’t think that this could wait.”

“What did you hear, Jax?” I asked, sounding as impatient as I felt.

“Diana was speaking about a keepsake,” he said, making my brows furrow. “She was asking your father about it.”

“A keepsake?” I asked. “What are you talking about?”

“She was asking him what he knew about it, and he seemed a little vague in giving her information. But it seems that she’s been looking for this keepsake for years. Something about your mother…”

My heart stopped in my chest.
