Chapter 242

cilia’s POV

The words echoed in my mind, long after she had spoken them.

I stared at her, my mouth hanging open and my heart practically in my throat. She looked so serious, and her brows were pinched together as she stared down at the chart in her hands. Like she was re-reading it to make sure she got the facts correct.

“Are you sure?” I asked, my voice coming out barely above a whisper.

She looked up at me and nodded.

“Yes, our labs don’t make mistakes like this,” she tells me. “It seems you are a few weeks pregnant. considering you are His Majesty’s concubine, can I assume-”

“No,” I said quickly, my eyes flashing with panic as I looked up at her. “Please, you can’t say a word. Not to anybody.”

The memory of my time with Leopold can rush back in full force. The way he told me that it was a mistake and shouldn’t have happened. How it nearly happened again recently.

The thought made me feel sick to my stomach.

He would never want this baby. He would never want me.

If he were to find out, he would make me get rid of it… my heart was so broken that I thought I was going to burst into tears right now. I bit my lower lip as tears filled my eyes.

“This is a mistake,” I tell her, though I wasn’t sure if I was talking to her or myself. “It has to be a mistake.”

“I assure you… It’s not. Plus, with all the symptoms you’re having, your wolf being on edge, unable to shift, nausea… it makes sense. It all leads to pregnancy.”

I shook my head. This time, tears left my eyes and spilled down my cheeks.

“I can’t have a baby,” I tell her hoarsely. “Not here.”

She nodded as she glanced down at the chart again; this time, I was certain she wasn’t reading anything. She was trying to avoid my piercing gaze.

“Well, we do have opinions,” she tells me.

Before she could say another word, I said sharply, “I will not kill this baby.”

She blinked as she looked at me.

“I apologize; I must have misunderstood…”

I put my hands on my belly, suddenly feeling the weight of the situation. I was pregnant with Leopold’s baby.

My breathing became shaky.

Victoria watched me for a long moment, concern clear on her face.

“I’m going to send you to the obstetrics department. The OBGYN will take care of you over there and get you whatever you might need,” she tells me. “Do you have any further questions for me?”

I shook my head, though the movement felt like an out-of-body experience. It was almost like I wasn’t even here. Her words kept replaying in my mind over and over again.

I was pregnant.

I was having a baby.

I was having King Leopold’s baby, and he was about to marry another woitran.

Bile rose in my throat, but I swallowed it down, refusing to embarrass myself even further.

When I hadn’t said anything, Victoria nodded before she turned and walked away, probably to prepare the OBGYN for my spiraling mind. I stared at the ceiling; my mind clouded with numerous thoughts.

Maybe thoughts about what I was going to do. I couldn’t stay here and have his baby knowing how he felt about me. He was going to make me get rid of it, and refused to kill my baby. I might not want to be pregnant, but, certainly wasn’t going to kill it.

There was no way I was going to let anything happen to this baby.

I put my hands on my belly, my heart heavy in my chest.
