Chapter 221
hook the thought out of my head. That was the last thing I should be thinking about right now. I was about to attend dinner with my mate and her family, and I needed my head in the game.
I went to Sophia’s room later in the evening to pick her up for dinner, as I had promised her. She opened the door almost immediately, and her smile widened when she saw me standing before her.
She was wearing a blue dress that seemed to fit her nicely, though it still did nothing for me. I hated that I couldn’t even find my own mate attractive.
I must be broken.
“Good evening, King Leopold,” she said, giving me a slight curtsey. “Are you ready for dinner? My parents will be/ meeting us there.”
I nodded as I offered her my arm; words seemed to fail me.
She took my arm but frowned up at me.
“Do I look alright?” She asked, batting her lashes as we headed towards the royal dining hall. “You haven’t complimented my dress yet.”
I realized my mistake and cleared my throat.
“You look beautiful,” I told her, though those words felt forced.
She didn’t seem to notice and beamed even more. My shoulder’s relaxed slightly. We made our way down the stairs and started towards my private sector. Landon was just passing through and paused when he saw us.
“The Alpha and his Luna are already seated in the royal dining hall,” he informed me. “I escorted them myself.”
I nodded.
“Thanks, Landon,” I tell him.
He raised his brows at me and studied my face for a moment longer. He knew better than to question me in front of my mate, but he also knew that something was off based on the obvious nerves hidden in my tone when I spoke to him.
“Of course, Your Majesty. Just doing my job,” he said, eyeing me carefully.
I escorted Sophia towards the private dining hall, stepping through the archway to find Alpha William and Luna Diana seated, just as Landon had told me.
They both looked up when they saw us and immediately stood to bow to me out of respect.
“Your Majesty,” Alpha William said, keeping his head bowed. “It’s an honor to be asked to dine in the royal dining hall.
“The honor is mine,” I tell him as I hold out my hand to shake. “You are my mate’s family after all. It’s the least I can do.”
I sat down in my seat at the head of the table, and Sophia sat beside me.
“Mother, father… I am so happy you are able to join us,” Sophia tells them as they retook their seats.
Diana reached out and took hold of her hand, squeezing it tightly.

“You are our daughter… we only want you to be happy, and we are so pleased to be able to witness it for Qurselves.”
Sophia beamed; it should have made me happy. But my mind kept traveling back to Cecilia despite how hard 1 tried to keep thoughts of her away. I shouldn’t have been thinking about another woman while I was with my
mate.
“Your wedding is only a little over a week away,” Alpha William said, making conversation. “I hope you’re prepared to marry into this family and make our little girl the happiest she’s ever been.”
“Oh, Dad,” Sophia chuckled, her cheeks turning pink.
Before she could say anything else, another voice broke through.
“Cecilia, we can’t go in here… It’s the-”
My eyes shot up when I saw Cecilia standing in the archway of the royal dining hall, and my heart stuttered in my chest. She was wearing a simple dress, and her hair was down, which most women would consider scandalous.
It was obvious she hadn’t meant to walk in here like this, but once her eyes found mine, it was like the entire world had stopped moving.
I internally cursed myself for how she affected me when my own mate couldn’t even get my heart to skip a beat. I had to fight the urge to stand up.
“I’m so sorry,” she breathed. “I wasn’t feeling well… and I thought there would be a bathroom close by here.”
