Chapter 19
Leopold’s POV
Cecilia snapped upright in the bed. Her eyes were wild, her voice quick.
“You weren’t feeling well last night, Your Highness, and you needed help,” she said. “I stayed to take care of you until late. I was so tired, I must have fallen asleep.” She lowered her head. “It was an accident, I swear of it. Please don’t punish me.”
I stared at her. I blinked slowly once, twice, as she cowered, making herself small.
I wasn’t sure what to make of her story. I did feel physically drained, which didn’t really match my memories of the previous day. Unless something had happened last night. Try as I could, I just couldn’t remember.
The door opened and Landon, my butler, walked into the room. This was a typical morning for us. Landon would come into my room to discuss the business of the day and bring breakfast.
But there was nothing normal about having a woman in my bed. Especially when that woman was my newly picked personal maid.
Landon opened his mouth as if to speak, but when he glanced up and saw I wasn’t alone in the bed, he stopped. Not just in speaking, but in physical movement. He stopped right in his tracks.
Then, a knowing expression crossed Landon’s face.
I realized what this must look like to him. Cecelia was still in the same bed as me. Our clothes were disheveled.
Irritation burned hot and fast through me. “What is it, Landon?” I asked with unusual coldness.
Landon shook himself from whatever was holding him, and gave an apologetic bow. “Your breakfast has been delivered.” He gestured toward the hallway, where a slave wheeled in a cart covered with breakfast foods – meat, eggs, cheeses, and coffee. “I welcome you to partake.”
The cart was wheeled to the small table in my room.
Cecilia was still next to me. I turned to her, and in doing so inhaled her scent. At once, a strange heat sparked inside of me, like the flash of flint against steel.
Startled, I pushed her from me. She toppled out of the bed, but caught herself before falling.
“Get out,” I told her flatly, recovering quickly.
She didn’t wait around to be told twice. Keeping her gaze lowered, she rushed toward the door and through it. When she was gone, I considered Landon, who was still lowering his head in silent apology.
I didn’t have time for that
“How much do you know about that woman?” I asked him.
He slowly raised his head again. “She’s a hard worker. Cleans up after herself. She seems to get along with the other slaves. Her constitution seems sound, and she appears dedicated, even if I suspect she wasn’t brought her as a volunteer.”
“Keep a closer eye on her,” I said. Landon might have good things to say about her, but I suspected… something. I

wasn’t sure her story about my needing her care last night was true. “I want to hear any unusual behavior immediately.”
“Yes, your Highness,” Landon said. As I pulled myself out of bed, he said, I wished to report to you that the date for the mating ceremony has been set.”
“When?”
“In two months, sire. On the night of the annual Blood Moon.”
The night of the Blood Moon was a time when most werewolves found their mates. The Wolf Witch had even gifted me a special potion to take that night that, while under its effects, would increase my chances of finding my
mate.
“Very good,” I said, and walked toward the table that now held my breakfast. “Then that is the day I will find my true mate.”
