Chapter 18

Why? he asks obstinately.

“There needs to be some distance between us. Leopold doesn’t know about any of this, remember? You don’t want to alarm him, do you? Then you’ll never get a chance to play with Lora again.”

Warren takes a moment to mull this over, then nods. Fine. A barrier.

He rolls over to make room for me, and I climb into the bed next to him. I make a show of grabbing the thickest, fluffiest pillow and shoving it down the middle of the bed between us.

“Goodnight,” I say.

Cecilia? Warren asks timidly. Can we play tomorrow, too?

I look over at him and feel a twinge of pity. There’s a young and innocent gleam in his eyes, and maybe it’s just how tired I am, but I can’t bring myself to snuff that light out right now.

“Yes, Warren. We can play tomorrow.”

He lets out a soft, excited yelp and I turn over, my back to him in the bed so he can’t see my face.

But apparently, that isn’t enough to dissuade him from reaching for my hand.

I reflexively start to yank it away from his grasp, but he holds on tightly, as if I’m the only thing he’s connected to in this entire universe.

I suppose, in a sad, strange way, I am.

Still, I have to say something. It’s the responsible thing to do, and I am clearly the only conscious adult in the room at the present moment.

“Warren,” I whisper, “You’re aware that this is a grave offense in the eyes of the law, aren’t you?”

Nope, he replies cheerfully.

“The king cannot be having this sort of intimate contact with an Omega beneath him, especially not one of his Omega slaves,” I explain quietly.

I listen for his response in the dark, but for a while he says nothing at all.

At last, when I’m starting to worry that he’s fallen asleep, he replies, his voice slow yet confident as he fights off the tiredness. My hands are not offending any law.

I can’t help but chuckle to myself at his brashness. What kind of logic is this? I wonder at how nice it must be to have the power to simply rewrite the rules whenever they inconvenience you.

As I try and come up with a good retort to his answer, suddenly I hear snoring and realize that Warren is fast asleep next to me.

The discussion is over, it would seem.

I decide that it’ll probably be best if I wait for him to fall into a deeper sleep before I try to unlatch my hand from his and sneak back to my room.

While I’m not keen on the notion of waking up next to a confused, disoriented, and maybe even disgusted Leopold, I also don’t want to risk rousing Warren from his slumber and making him upset.

1 count the seconds back from one thousand: nine hundred ninety-nine, nine hundred ninety-eight, nine hundred nighty-seven…

As carefully as I can, I slip my hand out of his and pull away.
