I hurried up the stairs of the stage, catching the attention of a few who followed after me. I didn’t pay them any attention though as I shoved my way through the curtains to enter the backstage area, my breath coming out in short, ragged breaths.

“Your Majesty, I think you should reconsider,” I said, my voice rushed.

Leopold, Landon, and Sophia all turned to stare at me.

Landon’s eyes were wide, and Sophia looked annoyed, but feigned shock. Leopold’s brows twitched, but his eyes poured into mine, and I couldn’t bring myself to look away.

“Cecilia, I know you’re jealous, but this is a little too much… don’t you think?” Sophia asked, folding her arms across her chest.

I finally pulled my eyes away from Leopold to glare at Sophia, a smug look on her face as if she had already woli.

“How can we be sure that the mark is real?” I asked her. “You told me a long time ago that you never got your wolf. When you turned 18, you cried to me because you were the only one in the pack without a wolf besides the children. Are you to say you’ve been lying this whole time?”

Leopold’s brows raised as he stared down at Sophia.

“You’re an Alpha’s daughter and don’t have a wolf?”

Sophia’s face turned a deep shade of red; this was different from the performance she put on for everybody else in the ballroom. This was pure embarrassment.

“Of course I have a wolf,” she said, letting out a low laugh. “I’ve been lying to you, Cecilia, because I didn’t want you to be jealous of how powerful my wolf is. But she’s real… her name is Sylvia and she’s gorgeous.”

I narrowed my eyes at her, truly unsure if she was lying or not.

“Then why have I never seen her during pack runs?”

“Because she’s too powerful,” Sophia said without missing a beat. “I didn’t want to outshine everyone else. I’m sorry for not being truthful, but I promise, I do have a wolf, and she recognizes Leopold as her mate.”

“That mark looks too new to be a couple of days old,” I blurted, pointing at the fresh-looking mark on her neck.

I was starting to lose my mind, and it was becoming clear to the others as well because Landon shared a worried look with Leopold.

“Enough of this, Cecilia,” Leopold finally said, his voice a low warning. “You are out of line. Return to the ball before I get my guards to escort you out.”

His words were a slap in the face, and I couldn’t help but take a step back as if I had taken a physical blow.

“Don’t be too hard on her,” Sophia said, batting her lashes at Leopold. “She’s had a hard life growing up as an Omega. Her mother was weak and died when she was young. My mother practically raised her as her own.”

My blood boiled at the mention of my mother, and I was about to say something else, but Leopold’s voice stopped me.

“Landon, escort Cecilia back to the ball. I would like to speak with Sophia alone for a moment.”

“Of course, Your Majesty,” Landon said, bowing his head as he stepped towards me. “Come on, Cecilia.”

I knew there was no point in arguing; once Leopold made up his mind about something, it was difficult to change it. With my heart in my heart, I followed Landon back to the ball.
