Cecilia’s POV

My blood ran cold.

Sophia stood in the center of the ballroom, a rosy tint around her nose and cheeks and a small smile spread across her lips as she stared at Leopold. The mark on her neck was bright and visible for all to see, and everybody sure did see it, clear as day.

Leopold stood frozen on the stage, his eyes never leaving Sophia’s neck.

Sophia glanced around the room as the murmurs started once again; most were shocked to find that Sophia was the King’s mate and that he had already marked her. Some others didn’t believe her and wanted a mating test conducted.

“I didn’t mean to make a scene,” Sophia said, that rosy tint deepening. “But I couldn’t keep quiet any longer.”

It was: Landon who stepped forward.

“Why did you run after the King had marked you?” He asked, his eyes narrowing.

“I was afraid,” Sophia told him. “I wasn’t sure what had happened. But my wolf was loud and clear that he was our mate, and I needed to make myself known to him.”

I furrowed my brows.

Sophia didn’t have a wolf; that was one of the things she used to cry to me about. I developed my wolf earlier than most, and Sophia had always expressed her jealousy. Most didn’t get their wolves until they were 18… I got mine at 16.

My connection with Lora had always been so strong that when I got her, it felt like I had known her my entire life… as she had always been a part of me even when I couldn’t hear her. Sophia was jealous of my bond with my wolf, and I assured her that one day, once she turns 18 like everyone else, she would get her wolf, and their bond would be just as strong.

But on the day of her 18(th) birthday, she never received her wolf.

Months had gone by, and she still hadn’t received a wolf.

She was gutted, and I felt awful for her… until I was forced to take her place as an Omega and became a slave to the King. I no longer felt bad for her… more so relieved that she was powerless.

My eyes found my father across the ballroom with Diana standing next to him; both of them were grinning proudly as they watched Sophia; not a flicker of surprise flashed across their faces, and irritation bubbled inside of me.

Had she had a wolf this whole time, and she lied to me?

I couldn’t believe that there was a time when I actually felt sorry for her. I hated the betrayal I felt, and I hated how humiliating it was that I had stuck up for her all these years when she was most likely playing me in every aspect of my life.

How long had she hated me?

“When and where did I supposedly mark you?” Leopold asked, breaking through whatever thoughts I was having.

Sophia glanced up at him.

“In the gardens,” she replied. “The other night at the first consort ceremony. I was out there for some fresh air… and then suddenly I was attacked. When I felt your fangs dig into my neck, I knew I had been marked. I didn’t understand what it meant until I got away and then my wolf explained that I was marked by my mate and that he was the King. I spent the last couple of days trying to gain the courage to confront you. I didn’t think it would be so… public though.”

She had a sheepish look on her face, and my chest tightened.

He marked her in the gardens?

That was the same place I had been marked by my mate, too. I didn’t even know Sophia was there that night. Then again, I didn’t know Leopold was there either.

Leopold’s face went pale at Sophia’s words, and I knew she had spoken the truth.

Landon cleared his throat once the room grew silent again.

“Alright… enough of this. There’s plenty of food and drinks. The ball will continue as normal. Lady Sophia, please come with me.”
