Chapter 16
You are afraid. You fear will kill you.
“Yes…” I say slowly, not wanting to anger him now with my refusal.
But to my relief, he only smiles kindly. Do not worry. I may get angry, but I do not kill at random. And I do not kill friends, even though I have none.
“What about all the other slaves? And the women who have tried to serve you?”
He shakes his head. I only harm those with ill intentions. Self-defense.
“Is it self-defense if you’re the one striking first?” I push back. Part of me is simply astounded at how reasonable he’s being right now, and wants to see how far his patience goes when he’s actually able to talk to someone who hears him.
They hurt me. They want to hurt me. I protect us. He cocks his head at me before adding, I protect you too.
I bite my lips and think about his proposal. “All right,” I relent. “Friends.”
His face is flush with excitement, and he howls happily. I stifle a nervous giggle of my own.
Friends call each other by name, the wolf states matter-of-factly.
“That they do,” I say.
I am Warren. You are Cecilia. We use these names from now on.
“If that’s what you’d prefer.” I’m not positive I’m in agreement with him on this, but for now, I can address him how he wants. When Leopold takes control again, though, I’m not so sure.
Come with me, Warren says, beckoning me to follow as he dashes out of the room and bounds down the stairs.
“Wait!” I call in a whisper, running after him. “I don’t think I’m supposed to-”
Already at the back door of the palace, Warren turns around, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. It is okay. Trust me.
“Trust you?” I ask incredulously, but he’s already pulling me out of the palace with him.
Once we’re outside, I look up at the night sky. The stars are somehow more beautiful than ever, but I’m too worried about being caught to appreciate them.
I do this all the time. The only chance I get to play freely.
He darts in circles around me, and his shadowy figure gradually starts changing shape. Suddenly, I realize what’s happening and cry out in alarm.
“Wait!” I yell, but he’s already shifted.
The wolf Warren is… not quite how I pictured. In my mind, such a savage murderer would look more wild, with unkempt fur and a hint of insanity in its eyes.
But the animal before me is tall and regal, with shining dark fur and a broad frame. His ears stand at attention, twitching slightly in the nighttime breeze at every tiny new sound.

Change with me, he says, and I can tell it’s a command, not a request.
Lora is going crazy with excitement, but I’m hesitant to let her out. I don’t want to risk something going wrong, and this seems like a potential recipe for disaster.
Shift! Shift! Lora cries.
I look at Warren again and sigh. I don’t have a choice, do I? I can only hope that Leopold doesn’t magically regain the ability to communicate with Warren tonight, so that my identity can remain hidden for now.
Closing my eyes, I relinquish control to Lora. I feel my body morphing, fur sprouting up all over my skin, my nose lengthening into a muzzle, my shoulders moving downwards as I drop to all fours.
When I open my eyes, I feel my consciousness in the same place Lora usually resides when I am in my human form. And I can’t deny that it feels good to finally let her out.
Wow, Warren says in awe. You are beautiful.
Lora shakes her head, flattered. Thank you.
So strong and powerful, he continues. Nothing like any Omega I have ever seen.
And then, with a sly smile, he turns tail and runs headlong into the forest behind the palace grounds, daring her to
chase him.
