Chapter 15
Cecilia’s POV
In the darkness, I can’t stop trembling.
The jig is up. I’ve answered Leopold’s woll directly, and now it knows that I can hear its voice.
So you do hear, the wolf says, low and gravelly.
“Yes,” I whisper.
Come back to the room, the wolf orders, and I slowly walk back towards the sleeping Alpha King’s chambers, my legs wobbly.
Even though I know what’s happening now, it is still somewhat of a surprise to see Leopold there, his back to me, looking serene.
“Your Highness?” I say quietly. My voice is hushed, but I feel as if it’s echoing all around the room.
What is your name? the wolf asks, and I swallow hard before I can build up the courage to respond.
“Cecilia,” I answer softly.
Come forth, Cecilia, he says.
The unasked question lies on the tip of my tongue: Are you going to kill me now?
But what choice do I have but obey?
Running isn’t an option; I’d be caught and punished immediately, and instinct tells me I wouldn’t be on the receiving end of the wolf’s merciful side.
Against my better judgment, I take cautious steps towards the bed, cringing every time the floorboards creak beneath my feet.
The king slowly turns around, and the expression on his face is totally unfamiliar.
In fact, somehow he doesn’t look like the king at all.
Without opening his mouth, he stares into my eyes so deeply that I could swear I feel his gaze touch my soul. The wolf’s voice reverberates in my head, Cecilia….
It’s all over.
I shut my eyes and hope that my death will be as quick and painless as possible.
Cecilia! the wolf cries out joyfully, and my eyes fly open to see the king bounding at me, arms outstretched in a hug.
“Oh!” I exclaim, shakily catching him as he holds me and buries his face into my shoulder. I feel my face flush a bit, but confusedly hug him back.
No one else to talk to, Leopold’s wolf communicates silently, and I pick up on a trace of profound sadness in his voice. All alone. I get so angry.
I pull back and peer closely into his eyes. “I know. You’ve killed a lot of people.”

Leopold’s wulf slinks back, seemingly ashamed of himself. Hard to control myself. Can’t help it…
“But maybe you could try,” I say. I feel like I’m coming across more stern than I intend to, and I rein my disapproval in. After all, really don’t know what it’s like to be trapped in a human’s psyche for twenty-five years.
Only can come out and play when the human is asleep, the wolf explains. So lonely. Nobody even tries to talk to
He looks at me and his face brightens. Until now! Until you!
I can’t help but smile in return. There’s a childlike sense of wonder in this wolf’s heart, and I can only imagine how emotionally stunting it must be to go through life so isolated.
“Why can’t you communicate with Leopold?” I inquire earnestly. “I’ve always been able to talk to my wolf just fine.”
Leopold’s head lowers, and I hear the soft and mournful howl of his wolf. Curse of a bad witch… happened as a young, young boy.
I feel a jolt of pity for him, but I’m still full of questions.
“Well, where is she? Maybe if you find her, you can make her lift the curse.”
He shakes his head dejectedly. No use. Visited Wolf Witch for help. She saved me, but could not break the curse. Evil witch is too powerful and fled far, far away.
