The Alpha King's Mind Reading Maid (Cecilia) novel Chapter 142

Chapter 142

Cecilia’s POV

The voice cut through the corridor like steel, and everything stilled.

My father’s hand slowly lowered, his body going rigid as he turned towards the source of the interruption.

Landon.

He stood a few feet away, his expression calm, but there was something dangerous in the way his shoulders were set, in the way his eyes had narrowed ever so slightly.

It wasn’t anger, but authority. It was the kind of authority that didn’t need to be raised to be felt.

“This is the King’s palace,” Landon continued, his voice even. “And within these walls, no guest… Alpha or otherwise… raises a hand against any of the King’s women. I already stated that there will be no fighting.”

“It was a misunderstanding, Sir Landon,” my father said, pressing his fist to his chest and bowing his head slightly, a sign of respect. “I ran into this… woman… bullying my daughter, and I stepped in before things escalated further.”

My heart pounded in my chest, but I kept my face blank, knowing that reacting would give him what he wanted.

Landon’s eyes flashed to me, his brow twitching slightly.

“Is that so?” He asked. “Cecilia, I thought better of you. To be jealous over one of our guests?”

I couldn’t tell if he was serious, but I decided to play along to get out of this situation. I just needed to get away from my father and Sophia and her bitch of a mother, who was staring at me like she wanted to plunge a dagger in my back.

If given the chance, I’m sure she would.

“I’m sorry,” I tell him, lowering my gaze. “I’m not sure what came over me.”

“Come with me, and we will discuss your punishment,” Landon said, his arms crossing over his chest like he was scolding a routy child.

“If I may make a suggestion, Sir,” my father said, his eyes devious. “Perhaps ban her from the ceremony tomorrow? She doesn’t deserve to be considered a queen.”

Landon’s jaw had tightened; it was all I needed to know that he was playing a part.

“I will keep that in mind, Alpha. You and your family should head back to your rooms now. A slave will be by shortly to escort you to the dining hall for dinner.”

My father looked all too pleased with himself as he draped a protective arm around both Diana and Sophia. They looked like a little happy family, and they thought nothing of anything else around them as they went back down the corridor and towards their rooms.

Landon let out a breath and turned to look at me.

“What really happened, Cecilia?” He asked, his eyes piercing into mine.

I felt my shoulders relaxing. I was right; he didn’t actually think I started anything with Sophia.

I hesitated, unsure if Landon would believe my half-truth, but I knew I had to spin it just enough to keep him convinced.

“She’s not too pleased that I’m considered the King’s favored concubine,” I admitted quietly, questioning if I was truly safe to tell him the truth. 1

Realization dawned on Landon’s face, and he nodded as he understood. I figured he would believe it more if it were as close to the truth as possible.

It’s better if you don’t find yourself in this situation again,” he said, his tone steady and reassuring. “Stay clear of her and maybe the others as well until after the ceremony tomorrow. I’m afraid that if she knows you’re his favored concubine, the others will too, and that will pot an even bigger target on your back. They will see you as serious competition, and that’s not something you want. Take it from someone who has watched women fight to the death to be in a position like you are in right now.”

There was almost a faraway look in his eyes for a moment, and I wondered who he was thinking about. But I brushed the thought away because it wasn’t any of my business.

“Thank you… for getting me out of that,” I tell him.

The corner of his lips twitched like he wanted to laugh.
