Chapter 136
Cecilia’s POV
I stared at King Leopold, dumfounded. My chest was tightening with each breath I took
“What?” I asked him, my brows furrowing even more than they had been a moment ago.
“Don’t play stupid with me, Cecilia. I’ve heard the rumors. Tell me who you were with last night,” he said, his eyes narrowing, leaving no room for me to argue.
“I was with you,” I tell him without thought.
I smoothed the skirt of my dress with my hands, a frown marring my lips.
“Or rather, I was with your wolf,” I corrected. “He found me in one of the slaves’ quarters last night, and I tried to hide you from sight when she came into her room to grab something. I guess I did too well at Kiding you.”
“My wolf?” He asked. “He went to find you last night?”
I nodded, sucking my bottom lip into my mouth.
“Yes,” I tell him, trying to sound confident. “He went to find me, and we talked. That’s all, Your Majesty. I’m leaving soon, and you’ll find your mate tomorrow.”
His jaw clenched tightly, and I wondered if he was about to say something else. Instead, he exhaled sharply, his expression unreadable, leaving me uncertain about his next move.
“I have some things I need to deal with today,” he murmured, completely changing the subject and giving me whiplash. “You can spend the day with the other girls. I believe Madam Isa wanted to do a dress fitting today anyway.”
With that, he had turned and walked down the hallway, leaving me standing there with my lips parted slightly, wondering what on earth had just happened.
I shook my head and started towards the concubine lounge again. This time, I went inside.
Vivian was seated on the couch with Elora and a couple of other girls. They seemed to be gossiping about something else now and laughing at whatever someone had said.
I saw Cora seated at one of the tables with Jasmine and Claira, sipping on their morning tea and talking in low voices. When I appeared, they all looked up, a bit surprised to see me.
“We figured you’d be with the King again,” Jasmine said, raising her brows. “Don’t tell me he fed into those rumors and is shunning you?”
I couldn’t help but smile as I sat in the empty chair at the table.
“No, he didn’t feed into the rumors,” I tell her. “Though he did question me about them. I told him it was a misunderstanding, and he seemed to have understood.”
“Then what are you doing here?’ Jasmine asked, cocking her head to the side.
“The King told me he had some things he had to take care of this morning,” I said, lowering my tone so I could intimidate his voice.
My heart fluttered as I saw the crowd gathering outside the floor-to-ceiling windows. The women in the lounge started towards the windows to get a better look.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
The girls shrugged as they looked around at one another. Cora was the one who stood first, and Claira and Jasmine followed

behind her. I was the last one to get up and follow; sortiething inside me was halting my movements, slowing me down more than I would have normally.
“Oh, my goddess.” I heard one of the girls breathing. “Look at that one… she’s so pretty.”
