Chapter 137
The room fell into hushed whispers as the weight of her words laid heavy in the air.
Jasmine, Claira, and Cora were already at the window, staring at what they were all talking about. When I went to join them, I hesitated.
“Just think,” Vivian said, her voice low enough for only me to hear. “One of them could be his mate. And then where will that leave his precious, favored concubine?”
My stomach clenched as I saw the line of elegant women and handsome men, a sinking feeling settling in that I might be losing my chance at genuine happiness. Then again, how happy could I truly be here?
I didn’t belong in a place like this…. with a man like Leopold.
It was the type of sinking feeling that I wasn’t prepared for, and it nearly knocked the wind out of me. I had to press my palm to my chest to regulate my breathing again.
Outside, there were carriages of young women and men stepping onto the palace grounds. All the women looked to be in their 20s to early 30s, and they were gorgeous. I mean… breathtakingly gorgeous.
The men, the Alphas, were indeed good-looking as well. As good-looking a man as old enough to be my father could be at least. The girls all looked eager, and I knew without a doubt that those were his potential mates. They were here for the ceremony
tomorrow.
There was a heavy knock on the door, drawing our attention away from the window, just as Landon walked into the lounge. He stared at each of us, a frown marring his lips, and then his eyes landed on me for the briefest moment.
He cleared his throat.
“You girls are expected in the foyer. Be there in 10 minutes,” Landon announced, and then he was gone.
We all stared around at one another with frowns before Vivian cleared her throat.
“Clearly an order from the king. I won’t be the one to make him wait,” she said as she headed towards the door.
Elora and a couple of others followed her as most of the girls rushed to the bathroom to get ready.
“Should we go?” Jasmine asked with a frown, her eyes following Vivian’s group.
Cora shrugged.
“Doesn’t seem like we have a choice.”
I agreed with Cora and nodded.
“Okay, let’s go,” Claira said as she headed towards the door.
We followed after her, her steps hurried as we rushed to keep up with Vivian and her group.
I was surprised by how busy the front foyer was. I had just walked through here a little while ago, and there was barely anybody here. But now it was filled with beautiful women, and their fathers, along with some of the palace staff.
Though there was no sign of Leopold anywhere.
Something ugly twisted in the pit of my stomach, and at first, I thought it might have been because King Leopold wasn’t here. But then I realized that wasn’t it at all.
“Now that all of the concubines are here, allow me to introduce you to the daughters of upper-class Alphas and the potential mate of the King,” Landon said, motioning for the women. “They will be staying in the palace until after tomorrow, so it’s up to you to make them feel at home.”

“Um… shouldn’t that be the slaves’ jobs?” Elora asked, rolling her eyes. “I’m not interested in charity work.”
“You will be if you want to get paid at the end of this,” Landon fired back, his eyes narrowing at her.
That made her clamp her lip shut
