Chapter 129
Though he was healing slowly I could tell he was healing. That meant I needed to work quickly or else.
My movements were careful as ran the warm cloth across his wounds, letting the water soak into them and wash them out.
I swear, I felt his body relaxing with each touch each time the cloth was on him… each wound I had cleaned. We were quiet for a long while; only the sounds of our breathing could be heard.
“You shouldn’t have put yourself in danger like that,” he ually said, his voice a low murmur.
I paused and looked up at him. He wasn’t looking at me, but it seemed he had gotten lost in his thoughts.
“If I hadn’t, you would have died,” I told him.
“Do you really care?” Leopold asked, making my brows furrow. “Or did you only save me to save my wolf?”
This again?
I put the rag down, my hands surprisingly steady for how intense this moment had gotten.
“I apologize if my friendship with Warren makes you uncomfortable. But I won’t apologize for my friendship with him. He’s been alone for a long time. That can drive anyone crazy…”
“You don’t need ot tell me what it’s like to be alone,” he said, his eyes narrowing and his voice coming out with a bite. “I know what it’s like. Do you really think he’s the only one who’s suffered? I am the Alpha King, and I can’t even hear my own wolf. Do you know what something like that could do to a man, let alone his wolf?”
His words made my chest ache. He was right; I had no idea what it was like for him. I was so wrapped up in Warren being alone for all these years, I didn’t stop to think that maybe Leopold felt just as lonely.
I know if I couldn’t communicate with Lora, it would feel like a part of me was missing.
‘I’m sorry,” I tell him, my voice dropping to a low whisper. “I overspoke, and that wasn’t fair to you.
He was quiet, his eyes finally found mine, and for a second, we just stared at one another.
“Is he really that much better than me?” He asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
I could hear the vulnerability behind the question, and it made my heart stop in my chest.
“I never said that he was,” I say, my eyes remaining on his. “But I’ve gotten to know him first. A wolf represents their human counterpart. Like two halves of a whole. Lora is part of who I am, just as Warren is part of who you are. There’s a disconnect between you two, but deep down, you aren’t much different. The difference is… Warren wants to be around me. I feel that you do not.”
