Chapter 127
“Pardon?”
“Let me clean out his wounds. Also, I think he would feel more comfortable back in his room. Shall I get some Gammas to help escort him?”
“I don’t need an escort,” I said through my teeth as I started to sit p. 1
I could feel the pain surging through my body with each mavement, and it was making my vision hazy to the point where I thought I was going to pass out. But then I felt her hand on my shoulder, and that warmth returned, sending the pain away.
“I insist… you need an escort to your room, Your Majesty,” she said, her eyes steady on mine.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea for him to return to his room right now. He still needs medical attention,” the doctor tried to
protest.
“Cecilia is right; I’d prefer to return to my room. You’ve helped me with the allergy, and that was all that was required of you,” 1 said, my eyes burning into his. “You are dismissed.”
The doctor’s face paled, and he stepped back. He knew better than to argue with me.
“Yes, of course,” he said, bowing his head slightly.
I turned to Cecilia.
“Help me get up, and whatever you do, do not let go of my arm,” I tell her, narrowing my eyes.
She swallowed, but she nodded as she understood; her fingers were touching my bicep as I moved to slide my feet back into my shoes that were resting on the ground beside the bed. Though I could feel some pain seeping into my bones and parts of my skin I thought might tear off, the pain wasn’t nearly as bad as it was when she wasn’t touching me.
I couldn’t quite explain why her touch affected me like this, but I’m starting to think she might be some witch.
I stood, my frame towering over hers, but her hands never left my arm.
We walked slowly out of the infirmary and down the hallway. The walk back to my room was quiet. She walked with her head down, though her arm was draped around mine, her hand resting on my bicep still.
To anyone else, this would look like the King and his concubine strolling the palace, arm in arm… but the two of us knew she was anchoring me… keeping me from feeling the pain I felt from the attack. An attack, the cause of which I still wasn’t sure of.
By the time we reached my room, I let out a breath, hearing the door click behind us.
She helped me get into bed, her face almost expressionless. I wondered whether it would still be expressionless if I were Warren rather than Leopold. She had that kind of friendship with my wolf… but not with me.
The moment she released me, I could feel the pain again, but I bit it back, my eyes watching her as she moved around my bed, basically tucking me in like I was a child. The thought made a smirk pull at the corner of my lips, and I was about to say something snarky, but she straightened and cleared her throat.
“I should go,” she said. “I will let you rest.”
She wasn’t looking at me; her body was tense, and her cheeks were flushing slightly, I wanted to snarl at her that she should look at me when she speaks to me, and she will finish what she started.
“You told the doctor you would clean my wounds. Are you going back on your word?” I asked, my eyes narrowing.
Her cheeks reddened even more.
“No, of course not. I just thought… maybe you would want to rest. Like real rest… not fever coma sleep.”
