The Alpha King's Mind Reading Maid (Cecilia) novel Chapter 126

Chapter 126

Leopold’s POV

The soft beeping of the heart monitor sounded to the left of where I was lying. I didn’t need to open my eyes to know where 1 was. I could smell the sterile atmosphere and the uncomfortable mattress that lay beneath my body.

There was a dull ache in my head that made me wince as I attempted to open my eyes. I shut them immediately when I saw the light in the room.

I heard a movement from beside me; it wasn’t in the bed, but maybe in a chair next to the bed. I took a deep breath, her scent filling my nose in an instant, and suddenly, I felt myself relaxing. The comfort of having her there, waiting for me, was almost too much for me to handle.

Cecilia.

Her name was on the tip of my tongue, but I could hardly get my mouth to move, let alone speak.

“I think he’s waking up,” I heard her voice; it was filled with raw worry that made my chest ache. A part of me wanted to reach out to her and tell her that I was fine, but I knew I probably looked less than fine, and besides, why would I have a sudden urge to comfort her?

“Your Majesty?” I heard the palace doctor ask, and then I felt his hands on my head, probably trying to see if I still had a fever.

I knew I didn’t, but I also knew that I did at one point. I could still feel the sweat clinging to my skin, begging to be washed off.

“Your Majesty, can you hear me?” The doctor asked again.

Suddenly, I felt Cecilia’s hand on my arm; the warmth from her palm to my skin made the pain that surged through my body lessen. I attempted to open my eyes again, my vision a bit blurry, but there was no denying who was sitting beside me.

Cecilia was watching me with such concern that I could feel it seeping into my bones. Her eyes searched mine for what felt like an eternity before either of us could muster up the words to speak.

“Why are you here?” I asked, my voice coming out raspy.

I realized just how dry my throat was. Without taking her eyes off me, Cecilia reached for the cup on the side table and brought the straw to my lips. I wrapped my mouth around it and sucked without thought, allowing the cold water to soothe my throat. My eyes never left hers.

“Did you think I was just going to leave you?” She asked. “I’m your favored concubine. How would that make either of us look?”

I could hear the teasing edge in her tone, though it masked the fear and the raw emotions beneath. I had scared her, she was worried… and she was trying to keep me from seeing it.

I wanted to reach out and tuck a strand of her hair behind her ear. But I stopped myself.

“Your Majesty, your body took some great damage. The wolfbane nearly killed you. If Miss Cecilia hadn’t brought you to us when she did, I fear you wouldn’t be talking with us right now.”

“Is that so?” I asked, my eyes still glued to Cecilia’s.

She was unwavering, though I knew it was taking everything in her not to break.

“You had a seizure after we gave you the medicine, but your body calmed down the moment Cecilia touched you,” the doctor continued, making my brows furrow. “It was the strangest thing; you started to shift into your wolf; he was howling during the seizure, but once Cecilia touched you, he seemed to have calmed and released his control. Your wounds will take a bit of time to heal. But nothing cleaning them out and bandaging them won’t fix.”
