Cecilia’s POV

It only took seconds before there was knocking on the door. By then, Anna was already hiding, and Jax was under the blankets of my bed with only parts of the bonnet visible.

“Cecilia, please open the door. We need to speak with you,” Landon’s voice sounded on the other side, and my throat went completely dry.

Why was he here?

I went to the door and pulled it open, surprised to see him accompanied by a couple of Gammas. After he got a good look at me, he nodded at the gammas who went into my room without a second thought.

“What’s this all about?” I asked, rushing in behind them.

“We got word that someone was planning to sneak through your window,” Landon said, his arms folded across his chest.” Given what had happened, we aren’t taking any risks where you are concerned.”

“You must be mistaken. Nobody snuck through my window,” I tell him, trying to sound convincing.

“Who’s this in your bed?” One of the gammas asked as he was about to lift the blanket.

I ran towards the bed and stepped in front of it, blocking his view of Jax beneath the blanket.

“Anna,” I tell them, before I could think better of it. “She’s not feeling well.. so I had her lie down.”

“Your maid is in your bed?” Landon asked, his brows raised. “She has her own bed where she can recover. This one’s yours, and you should be the one in it. Not the other way around.”

“She nearly passed out. This way, I can keep an eye on her myself. She overworks herself too much,” I tell him, the lie rolling off my tongue with ease. “It’s better if we don’t disturb her… allow her to get some rest.”

One of the Gammas was inside the bathroom; Anna must have been hiding somewhere good because he hadn’t found her. When he remerged, he lifted one shoulder.

“It seems clear in here.”

“We must have gotten bad intel,” another gamma said, his arms folded across his chest. “I knew we shouldn’t have rushed here without learning more information.”

“Who exactly told you that someone snuck through my window?” I asked, my brows furrowed.

“It was Vivian,” one of the gammas said, looking at the other, who just nodded. “She came up to us and told us that someone was planning on sneaking through your window this evening.”

At this point, Landon whipped around to face the gammas, his eyes blazing with fury.

“Are you telling me that two of my most trusted Gamma warriors went off the word of a concubine?” Landon asked, a snarkin his words. “And then came to me, acting like they knew the facts??”

The gammas paled as they stammered for answers.

“Well… she was so sure about it,” one of them said, looking at the other for answers, but he only gave him a slight shake of the head and lifted his shoulders. “We didn’t have a reason not to believe her.”

“Leave,” Landon ordered, pointing at the door. “You two incompetent idiots will hear about this from the King.”

They didn’t argue; they left without another word, leaving me alone with Landon. Well… in theory, I was alone with Landon.

“I apologize about this, Cecilia. I should have fact-checked before we came here,” Landon said, shaking his head. “I’ll leave you

He started to leave, but before he could, I stepped forward.

“Landon, why am I at this palace and not the other one?”
