Jax climbed through the window, his body looming over me once he was steady on his feet.

“I overheard the concubines talking,” he said, shaking his head with disbelief clear or his face. “They were saying that you were mauled and that your face was completely ruined. But you look fine to me…”

I pressed my lips together and stared at the ground for a moment, trying to figure out what to say.

“It wasn’t that bad,” I told him.

“Don’t bullshit me,” he said, cupping my face in his hands and taking me by surprise.

I didn’t like him touching me like this, and neither did Lora. I could hear her growl internally at the sudden closeness.

“Jax, you shouldn’t be here,” I tell him, trying to step away from him. “It’s not safe. You could be found out.”

“Nobody knows I’m here,” he tells me. “I just came to make sure you were okay for myself. When I overheard Vivian talking-”

“Vivian?” I asked, my brows furrowed. “What was she saying?”

“She was telling everyone how hideous you were. She apparently got a glimpse of you when they brought you back to the palace the first time. But then they decided to move you here, and she saw you in passing. She said you practically had no face, and you body was torn to shreds. She sounded sickly happy about it.”

“I will let you two talk in private,” Anna said before she left the room.

Jax’s brows furrowed even more.

“Isn’t that the maid who gave you the note?” Jax asked the moment we were alone.

I stepped away from him, successfully and finally gaining some space between us.

“Yeah, but she said it was a misunderstanding. I guess she thought he was you,” I tell him with the lift of my shoulders. “I’m honestly too tired to think too much about it right now. But seriously, Jax. You shouldn’t be here. If the King finds out”

“Nobody knows that I’m here,” he assured me, trying to silence my concerns.

“It won’t be hard for them to figure it out when they go to look for you, and you aren’t there,” I tell him, folding my arms across my chest. “Look, you see that I’m okay. You can leave now.”

He shakes his head, his lips pressing in a thin line.

“You were nearly killed, Cecilia,” he said, his eyes narrowing at me. “I knew this place wasn’t safe for you, and that proves it You shouldn’t be his concubine… You are way too good for that, and you deserve better. Let me help you get out of here… we can go somewhere safe where this shit won’t happen.”

I took a step away from him, suddenly feeling overwhelmed.

“Jax, come on… “You don’t mean that,” I tell him, my eyes trained on him. “We’ve always been nothing more than friends. Why the sudden interest in me now?”

“It’s not sudden for me,” he tells me, taking a step closer without my permission. “I’ve had these feelings for a long time. I’m just now sharing them with you. “Please… come with me and-”

The door swung open in that moment, making me jump.

Anna rushed in, her eyes were wide.

“Gammas are here to check on you,” she told me, breathless. “They got word that you might have a visitor. They’ve come from the other palace. They are on their way up here as we speak.”

“Shit,” he muttered. “She set me up.”

“Who?” I asked. “I thought nobody knew you were here??”

He looked guilty when his eyes met mine.

“I overheard Vivian talking with the other concubines, and then she might have convinced me that going to check on you was a good idea. She told me I should climb through the window because women like that kind of thing.”

My heart stopped in my chest.

“Jax,” I started to scold, but approaching footsteps stopped me. I knew I didn’t have enough time. “We will talk about this later.”

Without another thought, I turned to Anna.

“Give me your bonnet,” I say hurriedly. “And I need you to hide somewhere; anywhere.”

She frowned, her brows furrowed as I took her bonnet off her.
