Chapter 110
Cecilia’s POV
It was later in the evening when heard a knock on my door. I internally groaned, wondering who that could be now. I wasn’t really up for more visitors. The concubines had left a few hours ago, leaving a sour taste in my mouth with the information they shared.
The thought of the others trying to take my position as the King’s favored concubine made the inside of my stomach feel like it was filled with lead. There was no way that the King would take any of them up on their offer, though… right? I mean, he had every opportunity to have them way before I ever arrived at the palace, and he never had before, so I knew I had nothing to worry about.
But at the same time, the thought of others flirting with him… I felt sick to my stomach, and Lora didn’t really take well to that thought either.
It was confusing to say the least.
Confusing because why should I care so much if I’m his favorite or not… it didn’t make any sense. I was only here temporarily. Soon enough, he was going to find his mate, and then he would forget all about me.
The Consort Ceremony was only around the corner, and then afterwards, they were going to send me back to the very pack that tried to kill me. I pressed my lips together, trying to keep that thought from tormenting me too much.
The knock sounded again, and I realized I had forgotten somebody was at the door. I was out of it this evening.
I shook my head and stood from the chair that I was perched in across the room. I placed the book I was attempting to read on the small table beside the chair. I barely registered a single word in that book because I was too lost in thought.
I went to the door and opened it, my eyes widening when I saw Anna standing there.
She gave me a sheepish smile and sucked her bottom lip into her mouth, like she was afraid I was about to scold her.
“Anna?” I asked, blinking a few times like my eyes were playing tricks on me. “What are you doing here?”
“I was brought here by Landon,” she told me, her voice soft. “He wanted me here so I can tend to you. He gave me the room next door, and I just finished settling in. Figured I’d come to see if you needed anything.”
I blinked again, still trying to process her words.
“Landon brought you here?” I asked, my brows now furrowed.
“Yes,” she said, her head lowering even more. “And also, I wanted to apologize for the misunderstanding.”
“Misunderstanding?”
She nodded her head once.
“A hooded figure came to me and told me his name was Jax. I thought he was your friend… but it turns out, he lied to me.”
I blinked a few more times, staring at her with disbelief. She had seen Jax plenty of times before… at least, I thought she had.
I wasn’t really sure what to say in response..
“I never meant to put you in danger,” she continued, her head lowering even more. “If I thought for a second that he wasn’t the actual Jax… I would have never given you that note. We were both victims… though you got it a lot worse than I did, and I’m so sorry for what you went through…”
I swallowed, my eyes trained on her. I was trying to find any tell of a lie; she was either telling me the truth or really good at lying.
+15 Bonus
I was going to go with the former on this one because I was exhausted of thinking too much, and she did seem genuine. I suppose she could make a mistake like this.
