Chapter 11
Cecilia’s POV
I eventually pry my way free of the crowd and make it back to the main palace, where I smooth out my clothes, scrub away a couple bloodstains on my skin, and redress in a rush.
After rejoining the Alpha King in his room, he expresses modest approval that I was able to return in such a short time.
“Follow me, please,” he commands, and I gladly oblige.
Watching the king’s daily routine up close and personal is very different from hearing stories about him from my far-removed home in the Silver Pack.
I obediently follow him throughout his day, keeping a respectable distance, of course.
In his royal office, I observe as he diligently pens various decrees that allocate food, money, and other resources to the packs under his rule. His brow furrows with concern as he deliberates on a property dispute between two Alphas, and a wise look appears in his eyes as he signs off on a request for an open forum to resolve another pack’s complaints about their Alpha leader.
To my own surprise, I find myself gazing upon him with a new admiration and regard for his work.
My nerves ramp up a bit when lunch and dinnertime approach, but thankfully, the slaves in the kitchen are on top of everything. I deliver his meals with no issue, and he eats both with apparent satisfaction.
In the afternoon, I go out with him to the palace grounds and walk behind him just out of earshot as he discusses new military protocols with a senior commander from his army.
Later in the evening, he orders me to meet with Landon to debrief, then rendezvous with him back in his royal bedchamber.
“How did it go?” Landon asks when he sees me.
“I’m alive,” I reply humbly.
Following a hurried review of my day, I am sent back to the king’s quarters to finish out my service for the night.
My feet ache by the time I get back to his bedroom, and my head is pounding. Every nerve and muscle in my body feels exhausted, and I can’t wait to rest.
But my duties for the day are still not over yet.
At his desk, the Alpha King Leopold persists, meticulously going through the stack of papers in front of him.
I feel a twinge of sympathy- but the feeling is immediately cut into by a murmuring hum of displeasure from Leopold’s wolf.
Work, work, work, all day long.
I tense up and listen as closely as I can.
Cold. Hungry. Tired. Stupid maid…
The words are prickly and terse, and I realize I’ve completely neglected to notice the king’s state while
