Chapter 10

He must be optimistic about my fate here, even if his tone always sounds so cold to my ears. And now I will have a chance to escape, even if just temporarily, and go back to confront my father,
I’ll have to work harder than I ever have before during these next three months.
Resolute once more in my plan, I proceed to the courtyard, searching for Landon.
I find him back in the main entrance hall with the rest of the slaves, where he seems to be giving instructions as to how the rest of them will be assigned to the daily responsibilities of the palace grounds.
As I step into the hall and am spotted by the crowd, shocked whispers erupt among the other slaves.
“She’s alive!” someone shouts, and Landon turns around.
“Oh,” he says simply. “Come forth, Cecilia.” He beckons me towards him, and I obey.
“How is she still alive?” somebody else murmurs in wonderment.
“The other girl didn’t make it out of there,” someone else remarks. “This one must have done something different.”
“Quiet, everyone,” Landon calls out.
The group’s chattering lowers to a quiet hum of anxious anticipation.
“This is Cecilia of the Silver Moon Pack,” Landon announces, glancing at me and then back at his captive audience. “She is going to be the Alpha King Leopold’s new personal maid. You will all treat her with the authority that this position holds.”
I gulp nervously, but the eyes in the room don’t seem to convey any sort of jealousy or resentment. On the contrary, the other slaves look amazed, even inspired.
“Cecilia will not be joining the rest of you in the slaves’ quarters, nor will you see her completing the same palace tasks. However, if she ever comes to one of you in need of something, it is your duty to answer to her command, as this is a direct reflection of the orders of the Alpha King.”
He turns to me and says, more privately, “You will be rooming in servant quarters. The king’s personal maid resides in the palace with him, so your bedchamber will be next to his, on the same floor.”
I nod, speechless.
“You will want to go there and get yourself tidied up,” he adds, his eyes surveying my mildly frazzled hair and scuffed shoes.
“Y-yes, sir,” I respond. “Thank you.”
“Hm,” he murmurs. He returns his focus to the bustling crowd. “The rest of you! Please proceed to the slaves’ quarters to receive your assignments.”
The moment he exits the hall, I am swarmed by admirers.
“Cecilia!” one girl cries. “How did you do it?”
Another asks, “Did you watch Lucy die?”

“One at a time, please,” I manage to stammer.
“You’re overcrowding her someone else yells, and the group seems to calm down a little.
“What happened?” the first girl asks again. “You have to tell us how you survived!”
I look at her, wanting more desperately than anything to tell the truth. But even if they believed me, it wouldn’t be
any use.
At best, knowing that I have a special gift that allows me to hear the Alpha King’s wolf would depress them. As far as I know, there isn’t anything one can do to attain this ability.
At worst, it might upset them to discover that I possess a secret ace card that none of them do. It’s the kind of thing that could easily push the wrong person to retaliate if they feel like I’ve got art unfair advantage.
The last thing I need is to start making enemies here.
“All I did was be as observant as possible,” I offer lamely.
Seeing the looks of disappointment that fall over the faces around me, I thinking quickly and elaborate: “As long as you pay extremely close attention to detail, you’ll be able to discern what the Alpha King is feeling. From there, it’s not too difficult to correctly interpret his needs, wants, and dislikes.”
With my words, hope trickles back into the crowd, and I relax as the tension surrounding me dissipates.
