Serendipity's Secret (Melanie) novel Chapter 63

Chapter 63

1/1

Sophie said, pouting, We grew up in the same neighborhood, yet you didn’t even tell me you were coming back.”

Tanner had already entered the living room. He tossed the clothes he had bought for his mother onto the couch before sitting down and lighting another cigarette. He had a strong smoking habit, going through a pack a day

What’s there to tell? I’m back now. No need to make a fuss,he replied flatly, seemingly oblivious to Sophie’s feelings

Sophie’s face paled, and she instinctively bit her lip. Don’t say that. Telling me wouldn’t cost you anything, would it? You have no idea how much I missed you while you were away.”

By the end of her sentence, her cheeks had flushed red

Even Tanner, as thickheaded as he was, began to realize something. He had never had feelings for Sophie, even though they had known each other since they were

young

He had been a troublemaker in their neighborhood, and Edward wasn’t any saint either. The two had often fought over their claim to the area

Meanwhile, Sophie had followed him around and didn’t even acknowledge Edward as her brother

You should miss someone else. Why miss me?Tanner asked

His unresponsiveness only made Sophie more anxious

After entering high school, many students in her class had engaged in flirtationships; some even secretly dated

She had never pursued anyone, not because she wasn’t interested but because her heart already belonged to someone else

I don’t care. I just want to miss you. You’re not seeing anyone anyway. It’s not illegal for me to miss you,she insisted

Tanner’s frown deepened, but he didn’t pursue the topic further. Instead, he brought up Melanie. I heard Edward got married. Who’s that lady? Do you know the details?”

Sophie was taken aback by how quickly the subject had changed. Nevertheless, she explained the situation. While at it, she added a few snide remarks about Melanie

She’s just a bumpkin. How can she be worthy of Edward? Once her kid is born, she’ll be kicked to the curb.”

Tanner’s expression darkened upon hearing Sophie’s disdain. After all these years, she still thought so highly of herself. This attitude was one of the reasons he had never been fond of her. She was arrogant, always behaving like a privileged princess above everyone else

Is that what Edward thinks?Tanner asked

Sophie wasn’t sure what Edward thought but believed that he must not be interested in Melanie. She was confident that her brother’s ideal type wasn’t a country bumpkin

But if Edward hadn’t married Melanie, Yaeger would have been the one to do it instead. Edward had always looked after them, so he sacrificed himself for their happiness

Once Melanie’s baby was born, Edward would definitely dump her

Probably. I mean, why would Edward choose her? She’s only goodlooking. Other than that, she’s got nothing to offer. She’s not worthy of him,Sophle said. Tanner’s brows knitted together. If that were the case, the Graysons were quite malicious. Weren’t they just ganging up on a young lady

Melanie was pitiful enough without being treated only as a babymaking machine

Edward wasn’t exactly a good guy, either. As a kid, he used to be quite rough in fights, even splitting someone’s forehead open

Then, out of nowhere, he seemed to change his ways. As he got older, he entered the political scene. And now, seeing him dressed up in glasses and a tie initated Tanner

It was bad enough that he was shady. Now he was bullying women, too

Noticing Tanner’s silence, Sophie became curious. Why are you asking about this, Tanner? Is there something going on?”
