Chapter 24
Melanie’s expression froze at his words
He said he didn’t have much money, yet he was talking about buying her a car. Was he just teasing her?
“Are you kidding me?” she said, pushing Edward’s hand away and shifting back.
Edward found it amusing. He had heard that a woman’s mood could change faster than flipping a page, but witnessing it firsthand was something else.
“I may not have the cash, but my aunt has a used car. I can try to convince her to lend it to you,” he explained.
His aunt was well–off, having started her own business when private enterprises were making a comeback. Her husband was successful, too, and they were in good financial shape.

They had recently bought a new car, get around.
Though
and the old car was sitting unused. Edward thought it would be smarter to get that one for Melanie, malding it easier for her to
h they had a car at home, it wouldn’t be available for her use.
“Forget what I said earlier. You’re really something else!”
Hearing this, Melanie’s mood instantly brightened, and she leaned in closer. “Forge
Edward raised an eyebrow, bemused. While others might not know whose babies she was carrying, he felt like she should know it, deep down. How could she not? It was impressive how she could pretend to be oblivious in front of everyone.
“I’ll askher tomorrow,” he promised
With her spirits lifted, Melanie busily helped Edward set up the bed, even filling a cup with hot water for him. “Are you thirsty? Have some water before bed,” she said, hereagemess evident.
Edward chuckled to himself, nodding in appreciation.
He realized that things felt different now. He’d never been one to deal much with women. He often found it tedious, especially when they were overly flirtatious.
But after spending time with Melanie, he discovered a surprising enjoyment in their interactions–it added a nice change of pace to his routine.
After finishing the water she had poured for him, Edward lay down while Melanie grabbed an extra pillow, planning to cuddle with it to avoid any accidental nighttime antics.
Noticing her actions, he said nothing, shutting his eyes to drift off
Meanwhile, Melanie lay awake, tossing and tuming, puzzled by his kindness. Why was he treating her so well? Did Elijah really have that much influence? She felt unbelievably lucky.
If this kept up,
she might start to develop feelings. After all, having a handsome man around who treated her so nicely could melt even the iclest heart. The thought alone sent her into a spiral of daydreams until she eventually fell asleep.
Edward rolled over and glanced at Melanie, who was sprawled out in a rather peculiar way. He couldn’t help but tuck the blanket around her more snugly.
The next day, Edward drove Melanie around, looking for a shop where she could sell clothes. She needed to be in a high–traffic area, targeting a wealthier clientele since she didn’t want to deal in cheap goods.
Their neighborhood was home to affluent residents, making it an ideal spot, especially with several nearby family housing complexes filled with well–to–do kids. After circling the area several times, Edward finally pointed out a promising storefront. The rental prices were still reasonable since not many people were starting businesses yet–the local market hadn’t fully caught on to the potential. The rent would definitely go up in a few years time.
Melanie signed a one–year lease for the space without hesitation, paying only 100 dollars a month, totaling around 1,200 dollars for the year. It was quite a steal. However, as she considered the renovations and inventory, she realized her funds were tight. Two thousand dollars wasn’t as much as she had hoped.
Noticing her concent, Edward remained silent, but he offered, “I need to visit my aunt. Do you want to come with me?
