Chapter 22
Sophie didn’t hold back her scom, wearing a mocking expression
Melanie shot her a glance, thinking about how audacious it was for someone like sophie to question her intelligence. After all, she had graduated from a top–tier university, excelling academically from elementary school through college.
And yet Sophie had dared to imply she couldn’t read? Just wait and see how she would shine in the future.
“I can cead. I’ve taught myself,” she replied confidently.
Luca exchanged a look with Sapphire, feeling a bit caught in the middle. However, now that the conversation had reached this point, they couldn’t longer
oppose it any
“Melanie, are you willing to do this? If you are, then trying it o
out isn’t a bad idea,” he said cautiously.
Melanie besitated for a moment before glancing at Edward, then nodded,
Edward’s lips twitched slightly; he thought to himself that this woman was quite the actress. Clearly, she wanted to open a shop herself, and now she was putting on a show, playing along with him perfectly.
“Alright, since you agree, go ahead. If you need any help, just ask. If it doesn’t work out, that’s fine; we can support you,” he added.
Melanie felt a rush of excitement and quickly replied, “Thank you! I won’t let you down.” There was no way she wouldn’t make money. Just wait and see set her mind on something, she was determined to excel.
Sophie and Felicia would soon learn what it meant for a young widow to rise against the odds.
After dinner, Melanie and Edward cleaned up before heading to their room.

Sitting on the bed, Melanie couldn’t help but express her gratitude. “Thank you for today. If it hadn’t been for you, Luca and Sapphire wouldn’t have agreed to this,
Edward brushed off her thanks, as he was always especially patient with Melanie. After everything that had happened with her their first night, he felt a lifetime of debt to her. He would do his best to meet her small requests
“No need to thank me. It’s the least I could do,” he replied.
As he said this, he opened the door and stepped out, returning with a bankbook in hand. “Here’s 5,000 dollars. You can use this to get started. Opening a shop requires some capital,” he said, handing it to her.
Although Edward had a decent job, his salary was fixed, so saving up that much money wasn’t easy.
Melanie glanced at the bankbook, feeling a mix of emotions.
He truly seemed perfect; she couldn’t find a flaw in him. Thank goodness she hadn’t married Yaeger; otherwise, she would have had to deal with someone who would undermine her behind her back
She felt fortunate, but she didn’t accept the bankbook. How could she take such a large amount? With two lods on the way, the Grayson family was treating her like
a treasure.
But she knew the truth would come out eventually, and she couldn’t keep accepting their generosity,
Her plan was simple. Once she started earning money and had established herself in the city, she would take Nellie and leave.
In a couple of years, Nellie would mature in many ways. Even if she didn’t have a father, she wouldn’t be lacking in terms of character.
That was why she couldn’t owe the Grayson family too much, and she certainly couldn’t owe Edward anything. After all, he had been dragged into this mess because of her.
