Chapter 13 

Something about the whole situation felt odd to Edward. After all, Elijah and Melanie had been married for a while, so there should have been no suprises. Yet, he couldn’t help but wonder why certain signs were still there. 

Though he wasn’t exactly an expert in these mattem, he wasn’t completely ignorant as a man either Something didn’t quite add up. 

Seeing him besitate, Melanie grew curious. “What’s the matter?” she asked. 

He looked at her, opened his mouth, but then seemed to reconsider. 

She couldn’t stand it when people acted like this–hesitating and dancing around the issue. She prefered things straight to the point. 

“If you have something to say, just say it,” she said, her tone noticeably cooler and more impatient. 

He suddenly thought of skipping it. diven het personality, if he told her the truth now, they might end up having a big fight on their wedding night. That would make things even more award 

This wasn’t the right time for such a heavy conversation. He needed to choose a better moment to talk about it. Right now, despite their lack of closeness, at least they weren’t at odds with each other. But if he laid everything on the table now, it would only make their relationship harder to navigate. 

He was brilliant in the areas he was familiar with, but when it came to relationships, he was much less skilled. “It’s nothing. You’ve had a long day. Get some rest,” he said at last. 

She couldn’t help but remember that this was their wedding night. From tonight on, she would be sharing a bed with him. The thought of having a stranger beside her while she slept filled her with a mix of emotions. 

Though she had been married to Elijah before, they had never had any real intimacy because Elijah had certain health issues. 

After his first wife had given birth to Nellie, she had discovered that he had problems in that area, which, combined with the stress of living with his family, had driven her to leave him and Nellie behind 

Elijah had made some money doing manual labor and had eventually decided to remarry, hoping to find someone who would be good to Nellie. That was why he had spent a significant amount to many the original Melanie. 

After their marriage, he had felt guilty toward her as he wasn’t able to perform in bed. So when she had woken up in the hospital after an encounter with a stranger that had belt her pregnant, Elijah hadn’t blamed her. 

Once he had understood the situation, he had even tried to confort her, reassuring her that he would take care of the baby even though it wasn’t his 

His kindness had moved her. That was why she treated Nell to well. In the conservative 1980s, another man would have likely made her lite unbearable. Melanie had always been grateful for Elijah’s understanding nature. 

But Edward was different. He seemed like the reserved type, but he was healthy. Did this mean they would be expected to consummate the marriage tonight? Many couples in this addn’t know each other well before marriage. Sometimes, they would tie the knot after only a few meetings and quickly have children. It was just how things were. 

However, she wasn’t entirely comfortable with the idea of intimacy without any emotional connection. To her, it felt like a transaction–one that didn’t sit well with her. 

Then again, with a man like Edward, it didn’t feel Like a bad deal. She had once joked with her trends about hiring male escorts. They would pay good money for average quality. If Edward were in that line of work, he would probably be the top pick after a couple of days. 

A faint smile crept onto her lips as she thought about that. 

Edward, observing her expression, couldn’t help but ask, “What’s making you smile?”

After washing up, she headed back to the room. On her way, she ran into Felicia, who gave her a cold, resentful look from a distance. 

Melanie didn’t miss the glare. She knew Felicia was jealous–probably because the latter thought she had an intimate relationship with Edward. 

But then Felicia remembered she was pregnant. Pregnant women couldn’t do such a thing, right? Unless she was reckless enough to risk her unbombabies just to get closer to Edward 

With this thought in mind, Felicia called out to her and walked over quickly. Melanie raised an eyebrow as Felicia approached ber 

“Melanie, I know it’s not my place to say this, but I’m genuinely conrented for you. You’re pregnant with twins, and it’s still early in your pregnancy. The babies are fragile. It’s your wedding today, but you need to be careful. Intimacy coold harm the babies. I’m sure you know this, right?” 

Mellanie was incredulous, thinking just how two–faced Felicia was. She was sweet and eating in front of others but always passive–aggressive in private. Hexmage was clear–she didn’t want Melanie to get too close to Edward 

Melanie could only laugh at the absurdity of it. She wasn’t some desperate woman chasing after Edward, Even if she weren’t pregnant, she wasn’t exactly throwing herell at him of course, she wasn’t about to let Felicia get away with her Litle jabs. 

“Oh, don’t worry about it,” Melanie said, frigning concern. “Edward and I have everything under control. I spoke to the doctor, and they assured me that after the 

I trimester, it’s safe to be intimate as long as we’re careful. The babies will be fine. I really appreciate your concem. Thank you! 

Her words hit Felicia like a slap in the face, making her expression bright red with rage, just as she was about to fire back, she noticed Edward standing behind Melanie sexpression supersted that he had overheard the entire conversation 

Iman jostant, her expression shifted like a stage performer changing masks. 

Chapter 13 

“Melanie, as long as you’re being careful, that’s all that matters. Congratulations on your wedding! I’ll leave you to rest.” 

Confused, Melanie tumed around to find Edward standing just a short distance away, watching her with a curious expression. 

Realizing what had just happened, her face flushed with embarrassment. She had been showing off to Felicia, and now Edward had overheard it all. 

She was no expert when it came to relationships. In fact, aside from that one fateful night with the stranger, she didn’t have much experience at all. She wasn’t planning on anything happening tonight. She had just wanted to get under Felicia’s skin, but it seemed fate had other plans. Seeing her flustered, Edward remained calm. 

“I’ll go wash up,” he said before turning and walking away. 

Melanie hurried back to their room, mortified. But behind her, Edward couldn’t help but smile a little.
