Adele's words instantly ignited York's fury.
"What kind of garbage are you spouting?!" he roared.
Adele didn't back down an inch, meeting his glare head-on. "You know damn well if it's garbage or the ugly truth!"
York's face turned a dangerous shade of cold, furious gray, but he bit back a retort.
Sharon remained completely silent.
Adele, however, wasn't remotely finished. Leaning in, she sneered, "It's not even your kid. I seriously don't get why you're guarding her like she's carrying your heir."
York whipped his head toward her, his voice tight with rage. "Is it not Caleb's child?"
Adele scoffed. "It's Caleb's, sure, but does that mean you're the only one qualified to take care of her? What, did you sign an exclusive custody contract? Can't we take care of her? Are we legally barred from stepping up?"
"I'm not wasting my breath on you!" York snapped.
"Good, because I don't want to waste mine on you either," Adele shot back. "York, even a stray dog gets some basic affection after two years. How exactly do you view Sharon?"
Adele's phrasing was... well, it was hard to say if it was incredibly precise or just a reckless, unfiltered rant fueled by adrenaline.
Sure enough, the moment she said it, Sharon looked directly at her.
Sharon was deeply touched that her two childhood friends were going to war for her, but Adele's analogy unexpectedly made her want to laugh.
Josiah glanced at Adele, too.
Realizing her slip-up, Adele stiffened her neck and doubled down. "My words might be harsh, but I'm not wrong!"
Sharon actually thought Adele was spot on. Wasn't York treating her worse than a dog?
It honestly... felt that way.
Josiah, ever the cool observer, chimed in. "Great point, but maybe work on your analogies next time."
York yanked at his tie in absolute frustration, glaring at Adele. "It's way too early for this. I haven't done a damn thing to you, Adele. Did you wake up looking for a fight? What's the point of this?"
"Of course you think there's no point," Adele fired back, completely unapologetic. "Because you know you're in the wrong and you can't defend yourself! Did Emeline brainwash you? She's pregnant with Caleb's child, so why are you acting like..."
But the lines were rarely drawn this sharply.
And Adele was Josiah's girlfriend. So... how exactly was York going to touch her?
York didn't respond. He simply shifted his gaze to Sharon.
Sharon sat in silence, her brows slightly furrowed.
A group of lifelong friends tearing each other apart like this—it was downright ugly.
So, just to protect Emeline, York was truly willing to burn everything to the ground? He was ready to declare war on the entire world for her?
Sharon's fingers curled into tight fists. She didn't know what to feel or how to arrange her face, but outwardly, she maintained a flawless mask of calm.
Before she could speak, Josiah tapped his knuckles against the car window. Cigarette still pinned between his lips, he issued a simple, two-word command: "Get out."
York's voice cut through the air. "Josiah, that is my wife. I'm not dead yet."
