York Fordham was sitting on the sofa reading the newspaper. Seeing her come down, he stood up. "Let's eat."
He was impeccably dressed in a sharp, pitch-black suit that gave him an air of solemn authority.
With his striking brows and sharp eyes, he looked as undeniably handsome as ever.
Perhaps because he was on his way to pick up his precious Emeline, he radiated a high-spirited, triumphant energy.
Sharon instinctively frowned, a sickening wave of discomfort churning in her stomach.
She immediately lost her appetite, but the thought of the baby in her womb forced her to reconsider.
Without a word, Sharon bypassed him and walked straight into the dining room.
York followed.
They ate breakfast in suffocating silence.
Sharon actually ate quite a bit, having worked up a decent appetite. The little life inside her needed the nutrients, she reasoned.
It felt as if the baby was fighting for survival.
Was it afraid of being abandoned?
The thought made Sharon's chest tighten with conflict.
But today, bringing Caleb home was the only priority.
Pulling herself together, Sharon set down her silverware and grabbed a napkin to wipe her mouth.
York, dabbing at his own mouth, casually remarked, "You ate a lot, didn't you?"
Sharon's hand froze. She shot him a glare. "Is it a crime to eat?"
Her tone was undeniably sharp. York's face darkened. "My mom said you had a terrible appetite, hardly ate anything, and felt nauseous."
Sharon stared at him. The only thing missing was him outright accusing her of faking it.
Tossing the napkin onto the table, Sharon stood up. "Yeah, I made it all up. Satisfied?"
With that, she turned to walk away.
Being snapped at first thing in the morning made York's expression turn icy.
This was a side of Sharon he had never seen before. She used to yield to his every whim. She had never dared to talk back to him.
Her voice had always been gentle, walking on eggshells around him.
This sudden hostility was entirely because of Emeline.
His eyes narrowed. Pushing his chair back, he took long strides to catch up with her, his voice cold. "Whether you're faking or not doesn't matter. What matters is that you don't stall today, and you absolutely don't cause a scene."
Seeing their car approach, Josiah tossed his cigarette and stepped forward. Adele hopped out of the passenger seat and followed him over.
York hit the brakes and rolled down the window.
But Josiah didn't bother greeting him. Instead, he walked straight past York and headed for the passenger side.
Stopping by Sharon's window, he pulled out a fresh cigarette, ready to light it, but paused when he caught Sharon's frown.
Removing the unlit cigarette from his lips, he didn't waste a single word. He just tilted his head and ordered, "Get in my car."
York's face instantly went livid.
Sharon's frown deepened.
Hadn't she told them... not to come?
Before Sharon could process it, Adele marched up. "Come on, babe. Ride with us."
York's expression turned pitch black, the absolute picture of fury.
Without waiting for Sharon to answer, York glared at the two of them. "What is the meaning of this?"
Josiah spoke first. "Are you really pretending you don't know?"
Adele followed up, dropping the sarcasm and going straight for the throat. "Exactly. Someone's bringing his precious golden girl home to play nursemaid. What's next? You expect Sharon to kneel by the door and fetch her slippers every morning and night?"
