No More Mrs. Forgotten novel Chapter 40

Lamont's brow furrowed in anger, and he opened his mouth to speak.

But Emeline beat him to it. Entirely unprompted, she said, "York, put me down. Sharon is watching."

Nobody expected her to be so "magnanimous" as to bring up Sharon, to "care" about Sharon's feelings, acknowledging that Sharon was York's actual wife.

York looked deeply concerned. "Can you stand?"

"Yes," she replied.

York didn't hesitate too much longer and gently set her back on her feet.

A collective breath of relief swept through the onlookers.

It seemed Emeline was perfectly fine and fully aware of boundaries.

Once she was steady, York kept his hands hovering protectively near her waist just in case she swooned again. It was a picture of tender, absolute devotion.

Honestly, Emeline's little performance just sent her sympathy and approval ratings straight through the roof.

Look how tragic she was: her husband was dead, she was pregnant, and she had just been publicly humiliated by her mother-in-law declaring her husband's true love was another woman.

She had fainted from the sheer "indignity" of it all, only for her childhood sweetheart to step in and save her. It was a deeply tender moment, yet, knowing her boundaries, she immediately pulled away to protect his marriage...

Wasn't it tragic?

It was heartbreakingly tragic.

Meanwhile, Sharon was just standing there like a block of wood. Sure, she hadn't marched over to cause a scene or demand answers.

But she also hadn't bothered to step forward and offer a single word of concern.

Regardless of their history, Emeline was pregnant!

As soon as Emeline was securely on her feet, Paula desperately tried to explain herself. "Emeline, please listen to Mom..."

"Mom, I know," Emeline interrupted gently.

Paula stood there with her mouth open, suddenly unsure of what to say.

Emeline continued softly, "What you said was the truth. It's not exactly a secret in our circle anyway. It's just that... in a setting like this, before we've even brought Caleb home... saying something like that was just... a bit inappropriate. I couldn't handle it for a second, and that's why I..."

Paula immediately burst into tears again, drowning in self-loathing as she apologized profusely. "I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry. Mom was wrong. I'm so sorry, Emeline. Are you physically okay? We need to get you to a hospital immediately."

"I'm fine, Mom," Emeline reassured her.
