As Adele liked to say, they were all playing the exact same game, so there was no need to act innocent.

Taking advantage of the momentum, Flossie hooked her arm through Sharon's. "Let's go say hi, too."

Sharon nodded.

Flossie guided Sharon forward and spoke first. "Long time no see."

Emeline gave a small nod and a faint smile.

She shifted her gaze to Sharon, but just as she opened her mouth, Sharon beat her to it. "Long time no see, Emeline."

Emeline snapped her slightly parted lips shut and pressed them together. "It's been a while. Sorry for all the trouble."

This was another direct, calculated hit.

It wasn't an easy comment for Sharon to field.

Thankfully, Josiah hijacked the conversation once again.

Before Sharon could respond, he said, "Caleb's accident was an absolute tragedy. You need to take extra good care of yourself and your health. My condolences."

Those words forced Emeline to drop her polite smile. Her expression instantly shifted to one of profound, melancholic grief as tears welled up and she choked out, "Thank you."

Josiah stared at her, his gaze scrutinizing and sharp. "Don't mention it. It's the least we can do."

Without missing a beat, he added, "I expected you to be paralyzed by grief. I never imagined you'd be this strong. I have to say, I'm genuinely impressed."

Though he was speaking to her, Josiah deliberately shifted his eyes to York's face.

It was a masterful, cutting remark.

York's eyes darkened as he shot back defensively, "What's that supposed to mean? Do you want her to be paralyzed by grief? She has a baby on the way! She's being incredibly brave!"

Josiah offered a faint smirk. "That's exactly what I meant."

York's face clouded over.

Sharon caught the underlying implication and couldn't help but glance at Josiah.

He was subtly calling out York, implying that Emeline's lack of 'devastation' was highly unnatural.
