Frowning deeply, York grabbed both the cigarette pack and the lighter, hurling them straight out the window. His action was clearly a display of temper, as if he were silently snapping back, "Is this good enough for you?"
But he didn't say a word. With a dark expression, he simply pushed open his door and prepared to get out of the car.
"You still haven't answered me!" Sharon shouted.
York, who already had one foot out the door, froze. He turned back, looking down at her with pure impatience. "There are no 'what ifs' when it comes to this."
Sharon froze, a sharp pain piercing her heart. She forced a bitter smile. "So, you're saying you never plan to have kids with me?"
That question genuinely seemed to catch him off guard. He probably hadn't even considered it before.
He didn't speak. He just stood there, leaning through the open car door, staring at her in silence.
A moment later, he got back into the driver's seat, staring straight ahead. "You're either pregnant or you're not. What's the point of playing 'what if'? You're just being dramatic, asking ridiculous questions. You took the pill, so how could you possibly be pregnant? And even if you were, we obviously couldn't keep it."
Sharon ignored the latter half of his words. Looking away so she wouldn't have to see his face, she stared straight out the windshield. "I'm asking you, if I were pregnant right now, would you still make me take care of Emeline?"
York froze and turned to look at her. Sharon turned her head to meet his gaze. Her eyes and nose were still red, and her shattered, beautifully tragic appearance was enough to break anyone's heart.
He remained silent for several seconds. Instinctively, he reached for a cigarette, only to remember... he had thrown them away.
"You're being completely unreasonable, totally irrational, and downright hysterical!"
Throwing those words at her, York moved to step out of the car once again.
Sharon suddenly grabbed his arm. "Call me whatever you want, but I need an answer. I need to hear it from your own mouth."
Perhaps due to her unwavering persistence and refusal to back down, York finally broke his silence. He said, "I honestly don't know what you're trying to achieve here. You keep saying Caleb was like a brother to you, and now he's gone. His wife is carrying his child, his only remaining bloodline. Instead of thinking about how to properly care for Emeline, soothe her emotions, and help her survive the darkest time in her life so Caleb's only child can come into this world safely... You insist on harassing me at a time like this, acting as if I shouldn't bring Emeline home to look after her. Sharon, don't you think you're being outrageous? Don't you think that even if I hadn't offered to bring her in, you should have been the one to volunteer to take her in and care for her?!"
It was impossible to tell if York genuinely couldn't understand her feelings, or if he was just continually avoiding the real issue. Either way, his tone was incredibly harsh as he delivered the speech, making it clear just how furious he was.
