Sharon's tears fell once more, bringing with them an uncontrollable surge of anger.
Previously, she had never shown an ounce of temper toward York. In their two years of marriage, she had never once lost her cool with him. It was safe to say she simply didn't have a temper when he was around.
Maybe Josiah was right; she had spent so long on her knees that she had forgotten how to stand up.
But this time, she couldn't hold it back. She didn't know if it was because she finally wanted to stand up for herself, or if it was the hormones from the pregnancy.
Regardless, Sharon desperately wanted to lash out. And so she did, snapping, "Speak! Why aren't you saying anything? Are you mute?"
As soon as the words left her mouth, she surprised herself. Had she really just called York a mute?
York was equally taken aback.
Growing up, Sharon had always been a proud, even somewhat spoiled girl. She had a notorious princess complex and was known in their social circle as a fiery rose with thorns. Yet, in front of him, she had always been incredibly gentle, desperate to lay the world at his feet.
So, had all her past gentleness and obedience been nothing but an act? Had she pretended for so long that she was finally exhausted, too lazy to keep it up, or what?
York turned to look at her in utter bewilderment. Seeing her exquisitely beautiful face stained with tears only made him feel an inexplicable, intense irritation. The way she looked right now made it seem as though he had ruthlessly bullied her!
York's own temper flared. "I don't like them. I don't want to wear one," he snapped impatiently.
His response made Sharon freeze. He had never spoken to her in that tone before. He had always been aloof, ruthless, distant, quiet, stubborn, and steady—like a rigid, authoritative patriarch that naturally commanded fear and respect.
But with those words, his steady demeanor vanished, replaced by what sounded like a petty tantrum.
After a brief moment of shock, Sharon's anger surged even higher. "And you think I like taking the pill?"
He genuinely hadn't expected this reaction from her. His hand paused, and his eyes shifted to look at her. He saw how genuinely furious and panicked she was, tears streaming down her face in thick, heavy drops. For some reason, she looked exactly like a child throwing a tantrum over not getting her way—stomping her feet and crying.
An overwhelming wave of annoyance washed over York, but at the same time, he found the sight absurdly amusing. She had never acted like this in front of him. She looked like a furious, ruffled kitten now.
Though it was somewhat funny, it inexplicably fueled his irritation and anger even more. Yet, the way she was crying made him feel like he had committed some heinous crime against her...
It was so damn annoying.
York released his thumb from the lighter, extinguishing the flame. He pulled the unlit cigarette from his lips and shoved it back into the box.
Still feeling thoroughly frustrated, he looked up again, only to see Sharon's tears still falling.
