I Loved You in the Dark Until Someone Loved Me in the Light novel Chapter 16

Gillian hadn't planned on going.

But then her best friend, Valery Thorne, called her. They had grown up together and attended the same medical school before Valery dropped out due to family issues. Now, Valery worked as a medical journalist.

"Gillian, I just got back from out of town! The timing is perfect for the alumni party. Come hang out with me!"

Valery laughed brightly over the phone. "I heard this whole thing is to welcome Miles Stanton back to the country. He actually sought me out to ask why you weren't coming! You need to ditch that cheating bastard, run into Miles's arms, and live your best life!"

Gillian didn't take the teasing seriously and just smiled. "He's so successful now, and it's been years. There's no way he still thinks of me like that."

The sky outside was heavy and dark, and a fine, misty rain settled into Gillian's hair as she walked.

Autumn rains always brought a deep chill, and the temperature had plummeted sharply today.

By the time Gillian arrived at the karaoke lounge in the upscale mall, everyone had already finished their first round of drinks. The room was full of familiar faces.

"Look who it is! Gillian Jordan, our campus goddess! You're late, so you definitely owe us a few penalty drinks!"

The crowd immediately started cheering and egging her on.

Gillian hesitated, instinctively resting a hand over her flat stomach. "I'm not feeling well today. I can't drink."

Miles Stanton watched her pale face closely and noticed the protective gesture. Assuming it was her time of the month, he stepped in.

"I'll take her penalty," he announced, standing up to rescue her.

He was wearing a tailored black overcoat and gold-rimmed glasses, radiating an effortless, sophisticated charm.

Before Gillian could even object, he downed three consecutive glasses of liquor.

She stared at him, a complicated, indescribable emotion twisting in her chest.

"Oho! Looks like our golden boy hasn't forgotten his crush on our goddess, even after all these years abroad! Look at him playing the hero!"

Gillian had been the undisputed goddess of their medical school—radiant, pure, and a terrifyingly brilliant medical prodigy. Her suitors had formed lines that wrapped around the campus.

Back then, she and Miles had been the famous prodigies, and the rumors of them being the ultimate power couple weren't entirely baseless. Everyone knew Miles was relentlessly pursuing her, refusing to give up until the day he left the country.

But Gillian had been blindly, desperately in love with York Foster, rejecting Miles at every turn.

Being teased by the crowd, Miles maintained his perfect grace. He smiled warmly and cast a deep, meaningful look at Gillian. "A woman as beautiful and brilliant as Gillian is entirely unforgettable."

"Is that a confession I hear?"

Right at that moment, a young girl's surprised voice rang out from the doorway. "Gillian, I didn't expect to see you here!"

The private room's door had been left slightly ajar. Hailey peeked her head in, her arms securely wrapped around York.

"So you do know the new Vice President!" Hailey beamed sweetly, looking the picture of absolute bliss.

In stark contrast, York stood rigidly in a tailored black suit. His face was a thundercloud, his eyes radiating a predatory, bone-chilling darkness.
