Chapter 247
Third Person’s POV
Seraphina composed herself and sat back down.
Mortimer pressed his lips into a thin line, his jaw clenched, unable to figure out where to begin.
After a solid minute of silence, he finally spoke in a low voice, “I only found out a few days ago… about what happened that day.”
His brows knitted together. The words seemed to stick in his throat. After taking a long, steadying breath, he forced himself to
continue. “The day you were buried in the avalanche… the reply you received to your plea for help wasn’t from me. It was Vivian.

Having said that, he hung his head, not daring to meet Seraphina’s eyes. The tremor in his voice became even more
pronounced. “She told me her phone had died and asked to borrow mine so she could take some pictures and upload them to social media. And I agreed…”
Mortimer kept his head down, explaining with a shaky voice that grew weaker and weaker with every word.
Seraphina paused.
Almost at the same moment, an incredibly faint tremor-like the dying pulse of a fading heartbeat-rippled between them.
It was their fractured mating bond.
In Seraphina’s mind, Lily, who had been bristling with hostility, suddenly rose to her feet.
She sniffed the air, her ears twitching, and a trace of longing for her mate flickered across her eyes.
With a soft, aggrieved whine, she spoke, “Sera… that fool Barton was crying just now. He didn’t lie. All I can feel from him is the agony and despair of betrayal. His pain is real… Our bond… kind of wants to respond to him.”
That yearning, etched into both blood and soul, was the instinctive pull no werewolf could ever resist. Even though their mating bond had been severely damaged, it still yearned to heal itself-to reconnect with its other half.
Seraphina gently soothed the restless Lily, suppressing the bond’s instinctive response.
The cruel, heartless reply from that day surfaced in her mind.
Back then, those words had completely crushed her. She’d felt that the decade she’d spent chasing after Mortimer had become nothing more than a joke.
At the time, she’d thought that even if she wasn’t his fated mate-even if she was just a friend-he shouldn’t have been so
merciless.
How deeply must he have hated her to abandon even the most basic shred of humanity and leave her to die?
For a very long time, she couldn’t wrap her head around it. No matter how many times she replayed everything in her mind, she could never figure out what she’d done to deserve that kind of cruelty.
But on the day of the Craig Group team-building event, when she woke up in the hospital and Mortimer repeatedly apologized, saying he hadn’t known she’d been caught in an avalanche, she’d already begun to suspect the truth.
And it was at that moment that she finally stopped blaming herself.
Although Mortimer had never loved her, the ten years she’d spent loving him hadn’t been completely meaningless after all.
That was why she’d chosen to lay everything bare that day-to give those ten years the ending they deserved.
“I figured as much,” she replied calmly.

Mortimer froze. A spark of hope suddenly ignited in his eyes. Even his wolf let out an excited howl in his mind. “So… will you give me a chance to make it up to you?”
The hope in his eyes lasted only a heartbeat.
“No.” She met his gaze, her expression devoid of emotion.
Even though Lily was whimpering in her mind, desperately wanting to repair their broken mating bond, Seraphina never
wavered.
Her only goal now was to officially end their relationship once their contract expired.
“Sera…” Urgency flooded Mortimer’s face as he instinctively stepped toward her. The oppressive Alpha aura radiating from him nearly slipped out of control.
Seraphina raised a hand to stop him. “If you came today just to explain this, it was unnecessary. I’d already guessed the truth during the team-building event.”
Ignoring the pleading in his eyes, she continued, “I know you weren’t the one who hung up the phone, and you weren’t the one who sent the message. I’d already figured all of that out. But so what?”
She looked straight at him, watching confusion spread across his face. “You handed her your phone. You gave her the chance to send that message. And your protection was why she dared to provoke me.”
Mortimer was left completely speechless.
“I never brought any of this up because we had a contract, and I had no right to question you. But by the same token, I’m under no obligation to accept your explanations. Since you insist on bringing up the past today, let’s make one thing clear: even though you didn’t do those things, you were the root cause of them all.”
Her voice remained flat, yet every word landed like a blade, leaving Mortimer without a single argument to offer. “So… can we stop talking about the past now?”
Mortimer remained silent, his eyes rimmed with red, and he looked utterly exhausted and defeated.
“Is there anything else you wanted to discuss?” Seraphina asked evenly. “If there is, say it all now. If not, I need to get back to my office and prepare for this afternoon’s Werewolf History class.”
Mortimer slowly lifted his gaze to her. He looked disheveled and broken, yet he still spoke as though clinging to the very last thread of hope. “I’ve already joined forces with the board to deal with the Davises. They’ll go bankrupt soon and be banished from the pack. Vivian will never dare to mess with you again.”
As he spoke, he reached out and tightly grasped the sleeve of her coat, as though that might earn him hef forgiveness.
