Chasing His Betrayed Luna novel Chapter 117

DAVIEN

~<>~

The arrival of the King and Queen in the arena had everyone standing and bowing—everyone but Katie and me. Perks of being part of the royal family.

The tension around the arena thickened, the foul smell of fear and anxiety invading my nostrils as the King and Queen went to settle down together with the council and other Alphas and Lunas in the realm.

“Auntie Suzy is here!” Katie breathed happily when she saw Susanna. “She must be here to represent Grandma Mia Lu.”

Mia Lu happened to be one of the oldest members of the council, and her absence didn’t seem like good news to me. Within a second, Katie realized that as well, and the smile on her face fell. Her eyes darted to me before they shifted to her parents, her silent question shining brightly in those orbs.

“Grandma Mia has been sick. That’s why Auntie Suzy is here.” Elora announced suddenly.

Obviously, she had read Katie’s mind again, but this time, my mate couldn’t rebuke her. Instead, she pulled her sister closer, as we could both see how sadness crept into her innocent eyes.

The news of Mia Lu’s sickness shocked and scared my mate. I could feel her nerves even though she put on a straight face. Quickly, I opened my mind to Dolf, who helped me connect to Katie, and I said to her, “Don’t worry, Katie. Mia Lu is strong, and I truly believe she is already starting to recover. Everything will be alright.”

My mate simply nodded without looking into my eyes, but she grabbed my hand and held on to me as we settled down to listen to her dad, who rose to address everyone in the arena.

“People of Black Fur Pack, it’s with a heavy heart that I stand before you all today.” King Raiden began, his voice void of emotions but charged with authority. Pin-drop silence seized the large arena, and all eyes remained fixed on him as he continued, “It saddens me that despite how good the people of this pack are, the chosen leaders always find a way to put the pack’s name in the mud.”

I thought Luna Queen Aurelia would chip in a few words, but she sat quietly and let her mate continue, “First it was Tristan and Larisa, but now it’s Jarrett, and there’s no way on earth I will let him go scot-free.”

No one dared murmur, even though curiosity had taken over their minds. King Raiden called on his men and ordered, “Bring in the criminals.”

“I do not need chances from a dictatorship like you, Raiden!” Jarrett snarled spitefully. “Yes, I tried to get supporters to challenge your family’s claim on the throne, and yes, I have been doing that secretly, but how on earth is that wrong? We are werewolves for goddess’s sake! That is our way, and you can’t turn us into puppies all in the name of peace and democracy!”

“See? He is a fool,” Dolf exhaled into my mind, and I didn’t miss the low chuckle-like sound that my wolf made as he found Jarrett’s outburst amusing.

Alpha King Raiden stopped his men from hitting Jarrett, and he said loudly, “Before we call on the witness who would prove Jarrett’s crimes, I would like to ask you all a few questions, and I need you to answer them truthfully.”

Never in my life have I experienced loud silence, but I didn’t in that moment, but even that was nothing compared to the silence that came after King Raiden’s question.

“Do you agree that I and your Queen are dictators? Do you agree that the Floockhart family is harming the realm by protecting its peace and saving us from life-threatening wars that just happen to be buried in our instincts as Werewolves? Also, do you want us to scrap the democratic system we have been operating on?”

Just when I thought that would be the end of questions, Luna Queen Aurelia rose to her feet and added one that finally broke the silence, throwing everyone into distress. “Lastly, would you like us to lift the ban on the witches in the human realm and welcome them back into this realm?”
